Marco Kasper and Lucas Raymond were two of the driving forces for the Detroit Red Wings this season. Their impressive work is continuing on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean at the IIHF World Championship.

Monday, Kasper was contributing a goal and an assist as Austria edged Slovakia 3-2 in a shootout. Meanwhile, Raymond figured in both goals with a pair of assists as Sweden edged arch rival Finland 2-1.

Raymond and Red Wings defenseman Erik Gustafsson both drew helpers on Leo Carlsson’s first-period power-play goal that put the Swedes ahead. Then Raymond collected the only assist on Jonas Brodin’s second-period goal that made it 2-0 Sweden.

The Swedes improved to 3-0 for the tournament. Finland fell to 2-1. Former Grand Rapids Griffins defenseman Vili Saarijarvi is playing for the Finns.

Raymond now has three assists in three games. He was Sweden’s player of the game on Saturday during the country’s win over Austria.

Red Wings Kasper Paces Austria

Kasper scored his second goal of the tournament and added an assist as Austria won for the first time. The Austrians had lost close decisions to the Swedes and Finns prior to this game.

The Detroit center set up Bernd Wolf to give Austria a 1-0 lead. Later, Kasper, a 19-goal scorer for the Red Wings this season, beat Slovak goalie Samuel Hlavaj with a deke move on a breakaway to put the Austrians ahead 2-0.

However, Kasper would be foiled on his attempt in the shootout, losing control of the puck as he was bearing down on Hlavaj. Kasper has accounted for two goals and one assist in three games, as well as a plus-two rating.

Elsewhere, former Red Wings defenseman Filip Hronek of the Vancouver Canucks collected a pair of assists as Czechia dumped Denmark 7-2. Hronek was named the best defenseman at the 2019 world championship when he was a member of the Red Wings.
