While he certainly recognizes that it’s people at higher pay grades than him who will ultimately be making the decision, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider would welcome the return of Russia into the international hockey fold.

“We in the NHL are showing that you can find ways to play with them, because they are the best in the world,” Seider said during an appearance on the YouTube channel From The Blueline.

At the same time, Seider was understanding the reality that his opinion may not be shared by others, including those who will be ultimately making the decision as to when Russian teams will again be permitted to participate in IIHF-sanctioned events.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Council banned the Russian and Belarusian national teams from international competitions at the end of February 2022 due to Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine. A decision on whether the ban will be lifted in time for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games is expected shortly following the conclusion of the World Championship on May 25.

NHL players will be participating in next year’s Olympiad for the first time since 2014 in Sochi, Russia.

“The affairs of the governments of countries are not my concern,” Seider said. “Of course, we would like to see the best players participate in the tournament. But I have no right to speak on behalf of any government.”

Red Wings Star Serving As German Captain

Wearing his country’s uniform yet again at the worlds, this year Seider is carrying even more significance within German hockey. He is serving as captain of Germany’s national squad for the first time.

Seider is playing nearly 25 minutes per game for the Germans. His homeland is off to an 2-0 start in the tournament. Seider’s work is garnering significant praise from German coach Harald Kreis.

“Moritz is a young man who enjoys respect from his colleagues, not only for his performance on the ice, but also for his personality,” Kreis said. “What he addresses and how he addresses it is exemplary.”

Germany’s next action is on Tuesday. They’ll be squaring off with 0-2 Norway.

Red Wings 2024 first round draft pick Michael Brandsegg-Nygard will be joining the Norwegian lineup for this game. He’s fresh off playing for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins in the Calder Cup playoffs.
