The Daily: The Cost to Offer Sheet Knies; Tocchet Destination?

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman is on record as saying he doesn’t see his team going after restricted free agents with an offer sheets
Mostly, Yzerman believes there are plenty of negatives associated with offer sheets, led by the reality that offer sheets don’t work all that often.
But the St. Louis Blues did land two helpful players last summer. Plus, Yzerman is known for doing the unexpected. For that reason, we should all take note of the new compensation for this summer’s offer sheets (according to Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman).
Offer Sheet Compensation
Offers under $1,544,424, no compensation
More than $1,544,224 to $2,340,037, Third-round pick
More than $2,340,037 to $7,020,113, First- and third-round picks
More than $7,020,113 to $9,360,153, First-, second- and third-round picks
More than $9,360,153 to $11,700, 192, Two firsts, one second and one third
More than $11,700,192, Four first-round picks
Did you know? For offer sheet compensation, on deals longer than 5 years, the AAV is calculated at the 5-year value.
So a 7×$7.2M deal for Matthew Knies (@AFPAnalytics projected) would count as a $10.1M AAV.
That means – 2 firsts, 1 second, 1 third in draft pick compensation. pic.twitter.com/lI0g38ST99

When you look at the offer sheet compensation chart, it makes you think it might be worth it for the Red Wings to make a run at Toronto’s Matthew Knies. You would gladly give up a first-, second and third rounder or even two first rounders, a second and third for him. And the Maple Leafs can’t keep everyone.
Knies isn’t likely to want to play in Detroit. But the Red Wings are in a position where they should try everything.
Red Wings In Case You Missed It
Could the recently-signed Czech League scoring champion Eduards Tralmaks be the real deal for the Red Wings?
Detroit defenseman Simon Edvinsson has become friends with former Detroit nemesis Peter Forsberg.
It looks like former Detroit GM Ken Holland will end up running the Los Angeles Kings.

In addition to being among the scoring leaders at the World Championships, Red Wings free agent add Tralmaks is tied for the plus-minus lead at plus-5. He’s tied with former Detroit defenseman Filip Hronek (Czechia), plus Americans Cutter Gauthier, Matty Beniers and Will Smith. By the way, Detroit’s Lucas Raymond has 10 shots on goal to go with his three assists in Sweden’s three wins.
