Could it be possible that the Detroit Red Wings have caught lightning in a bottle in the form of Eduards Tralmaks?

The Latvian forward is currently tied for second in scoring three games into the IIHF World Championship. Tralmaks has two goals and three assists.

At the moment, only Boston Bruins star David Pastrnak of Czechia (six) is showing with more points than Tralmaks. The Red Wings prospect has as many points as Bo Horvat and Nathan MacKinnon. He’s tallied more points than Sidney Crosby, Mika Zibanejad and Nico Hischier.

Tralmaks accounted for a goal and two assists as Latvia beat Slovenia 5-2 on Tuesday. He’s collected a point in each of Latvia’s three games. The winger scored a cracker of a goal on no less a netminder than future Hall of Famer Marc-Andre Fleury when the Latvians faced Canada on Monday.

The Red Wings were signing Tralmaks as a free agent after he led the Czech Extraliga in scoring this season. Granted, it’s wise to take all of these developments with a grain of salt – especially when taking into consideration the lack of success Detroit GM Steve Yzerman has enjoyed when agreeing to terms with European free agents.

Red Wings Prospect Debuts Smartly

You could also scoff and suggest it’s just the World Championship. No big deal. On the other hand, the guy who lit up the worlds a year ago was Michael Brandsegg-Nygard. The winger Detroit would select 15th overall in the 2024 NHL entry draft was good for 4-1-5 totals in five games for Norway.

Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider was another who’s unveiling to the hockey world came at the worlds in 2019. That was also shortly prior to Detroit claiming in the first round of that year’s draft.

Tuesday, Seider and Brandsegg-Nygard found themselves on opposite sides of the ice. Seider’s Germany downed Norway and Brandsegg-Nygard 5-2.

Seider, who is captaining the German squad, skated a game-high 25:47 and was plus-two. Fresh off a cross-Atlantic flight after playing for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins in the Calder Cup playoffs, Brandsegg-Nygard dished out an assist and fired two shots in 17:33 of ice time.

MBN collected his helper on the power play while Seider was idling in the sin bin serving a holding penalty. Norwegian captain Emil Lilleberg was impressed by the qualities Brandsegg-Nygard added to Norway’s squad.

“He came in and did a really good job,” Lilleberg told IIHF.com. “He makes our PP better, and it’s fun to watch.”
