Detroit Red Wings
First Full NHL Season Brought Red Wings Edvinsson Everything He Needed . . . Almost
Playoff failure gnaws at Swedish defender

When he is reflecting back on his first full NHL season, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson is of the opinion that it was a mostly positive experience.
“It was a good season,” he tells Hockey Sverige. “I feel that there were many goals I had set before the season and that I reached.”
Of course, one of the most important objectives he set out wasn’t achieved. And that’s the only disappointing aspect.
“One of the goals I did not reach was of course the playoffs,” Edvinsson said. “But overall it actually feels pretty good.”

Edvinsson wound up with 31 points from 78 games, including seven goals. He was also a team-best plus-12.
“I would say that the biggest part is that I now feel very confident both with and without the puck,” Edvinsson said.
The 6-foot-6 Swede also feels that he’s become a consistent presence, that every day player NHL teams can rely on to deliver the goods regularly.
“I think it is my determination,” Edvinsson felt as the best attribute that’s grown in his game. “How I handle the puck and the defensive game. There is still quite a lot that I feel has gone quite well.”
Red Wings Edvinsson Gets NHL Approval For Unique Measure
It could be said that Edvinsson skates confidently and carries a big stick. In fact, his stick is longer than NHL rules permit. He was required to get permission from the league to use a stick as long as his measures.
“I have no idea how long they are, they’re probably not quite (six feet),” Edvinsson told Swedish website Aftonbladet. They’re long anyway. You have to have a dispensation, but I’m tall enough to have it. It’s in relation to how tall you are.”
Bonus Hockey For Edvinsson
While he didn’t get his first taste of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Edvinsson is wearing the famous Tre Kronor jersey of Sweden’s national team in the IIHF World Championship for the first time. As an added bonus, the tourney is being constested in home ice in Stockholm.
Marcus Johansson makes it 4-0 Sweden.

He didn’t hesitate when the call came.
“It was an immediate yes,” Edvinsson said. “Playing a World Cup on home soil . . . not everyone gets to do it, so getting this chance was very big.”
