The Daily: Another ex-Red Wings Legend a NYI GM Fit?; Shark Tank Update

The New York Islanders were originally interested in former Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland for their vacant GM job. But Holland took the Los Angeles Kings job.
Now, New York Islanders Hockey Now’s Russ Macias is writing that Red Wings legend Brendan Shanahan, currently the Toronto Maple Leafs’ director of hockey operations, would be a “perfect fit” for the Islanders.
“Immediately, he’d become the best executive to shake loose for the President title since this search began,” Macias writes. “Toronto has been the class of the league during the majority of Shanahan’s tenure, with the major exception being the failure in the playoffs. Winning just three second-round games is a cause for concern.”
The other issue is that Shanahan is still under contract to Toronto, although Macias points out that is expected to change because the Maple Leafs lost Game 7. In the NHL, someone usually has to pay for that kind of loss, particularly given Toronto’s history.
Here’s another twist to the story: Islanders fans know Shanahan because he played a significant role in luring John Tavares away from the Islanders and to the Maple Leafs.
Nothing concrete has happened, but this is a story worth following.

Detroit goaltender prospect Rudy Guimond (8-1, 2.25 GAA, .916) will be in net this afternoon (1 p.m.) when his Moncton Wildcats make a third attempt to win the QMJHL playoff championship. The game will be on TSN in Canada. The Wildcats won the first three games of this series against the Rimouski Oceanic, but the Oceanic have won the past two games to stay alive. Rimouski goalie Mathis Langevin (12-3, 1.47 GAA, .947) seems to be the hottest player in the series. When he beat the Wildcats in Moncton, it was the Wildcats’ first home loss since January. Now the Rimouski are looking to to force a Game 7.
