John Tavares-Toronto-Maple-Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ departure from the NHL playoffs signaled the start of the Mitch Marner sweepstakes. Detroit Red Wings faithful are among the many fans around the league who would like to see the 100-point scorer in their team’s lineup.

GM Steve Yzerman has the cap space and desire to sign a big-name free agent. The problem for the Red Wings is that Marner will have multiple options and is more likely to sign with a quality team than a team that has missed the playoffs for nine consecutive seasons.

The money is going to be similar no matter where he signs.  One website ranks the Red Wings as the fourth most likely team to land Marner.

While the Marner signing possibility might be a long shot, the Toronto shake-up could create other opportunities for Detroit. At 34, pending UFA John Tavares may not have as many suitors as he would like. There’s been a buzz around the NHL about teams trying to offer sheet Matthew Knies

Steve Yzerman acknowledged he has no issues trying to use an offer sheet, although he said he didn’t foresee his team doing it this summer. But Yzerman has surprised us before.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Bob Duff has figured out why GM Steve Yzerman wanted to sign Latvian UFA Eduards Tralmaks. Yzerman and Tralmaks have the same attitude about officiating.

The Moncton Wildcats didn’t play Detroit goalie prospect Rudy Guimond, but they won their first QMJHL playoff title since 2010. Rudy and the Wildcats head to the Memorial Cup.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard made a crucial play to help Norway avoid being relegated at the World Championships.

As Detroit fans would expect, Lucas Raymond has been among Sweden’s best players with two goals and five assists for seven points in six games at the World Championships. Raymond’s plus-8 ties him for fifth in that category among tournament competitors. Raymond and the Swedes are ready for today’s confrontation against the Sidney Crosby-led Canadians. Bob Duff wrote that story.
