It would appear that Swedish national team bench boss Sam Hallam might have a little bit of Detroit Red Wings coach Todd McLellan as part of his coaching DNA.

As unbeaten Sweden was going though its final practice prior to Tuesday’s game against Canada, Hallam suddenly halted practice and bellowed instructions to his players. Hallam felt his club was being too lackadaisical during a passing drill and let them know immediately that they needed to pick up the pace and effort.

“It’s good,” Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond told Swedish website Aftonbladet. “It’s about being crisp out there and doing the simple things well. And it’s about hard passes on the blade and good skating.

“After that, it was a good practice so we just have to go (Tuesday).”

Raymond is one of three Red Wings players on Sweden’s roster. All will be filling new roles as they take the ice to face the Canadians.

Red Wings Raymond Changing Places

Raymond is getting new linemates. He’ll be teaming with recent arrival William Karlsson of the Vegas Golden Knights and Marcus Johansson of the Minnesota Wild.

“It’s going to be really fun,” Raymond of skating alongside Karlsson. “I’ve met him a lot over there. We’re also training together now. William is a really good hockey player so it’s going to be fun.”

Raymond has 2-5-7 totals through six games. Detroit’s leading scorer this season with 80 points, Raymond believes Karlsson is the kind of linemate who will be bringing plenty of strength to their unit.

“His all-round game, speed and game sense,” Raymond lists among Karlsson’s attributes. “He works all over the ice and has that X-factor. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Rasmus Sandin of the Washington Capitals, another new addition to the roster, is going to be slotting into the third defense pairing alongside Simon Edvinsson of the Red Wings. Detroit defenseman Erik Gustafsson has been skating with Edvinsson. Monday, he wasn’t among the top three defensive tandems.

Gustafsson is enjoying a strong tournament. He has six assists and a plus-five rating through six games.

Kasper vs Tralmaks

Another huge game on Tuesday’s schedule sees Red Wings center Marco Kasper and Austria facing Detroit prospect Eduards Tralmaks and Latvia. The Latvians currently hold down the fourth and final quarter-final spot in Group A with nine points. Both Austria and Slovakia are at seven points. Any of the three nations could still grab that fourth spot.

Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider and Germany also need a win over Denmark to grab fourth place in Group B. The two countries are meeting Tuesday. Each has nine points.

Brandsegg-Nygard Saves Norway

Norway avoided relegation to the B pool of the IIHF World Championship thanks to a 1-0 win over Hungary. Detroit prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygard set up Noah Steen for the game’s only goal.

Brandsegg-Nygard was also making his physical presence known. He buried Bence Horvath with a punishing bodycheck that nearly drove the Hungarian player over the boards and into the Norwegian bench.
