If you believe that the Detroit Red Wings Plan A for improving their roster is the free agent marketplace, then you didn’t listen closely enough to GM Steve Yzerman at his season-wrap up press conference.

His Plan A is anything that improves the roster. That includes chasing NHL free agents, counting on a prospect, signing an unattached player from a European league and making a trade with an NHL rival.

“Certainly, (we are) open to trade for sure,” Yzerman said. “Again, I think we’ve moved more younger players into that core. It’s not complete yet, is it, Is it perfect yet? No, but as I stated earlier, we are prepared to look at doing something through trade for sure to try and make us better. And the free agent market’s getting thinner and thinner. Why that is, I’m not really sure. We have 32 teams, and it can be even more challenging. We have cap space. A lot of teams have cap space with the cap going up this year, which makes it even more challenging.”
