The Daily: Marner Has Interest in Vegas, Florida; Habs Plans

Hockey insider Pierre LeBrun reports that the Red Wings, Anahein Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings are among the teams interested pending free agent Mitch Marner.

LeBrun also says reports that Vegas and Florida are “of interest” to Marner “among others.”

The “among others” is the critical part of that report from the Red Wings’ perspective. Everyone understands that the NHL’s top free agent will look at established contenders first. But the Golden Knights have just under $10 million in cap space with five of their own players to sign.

The Panthers have $19 million in cap space, but don’t have Aaron Ekblad and Sam Bennett signed beyond this season.

The hope is that Marner will be interested in playing on a line with Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin, and the Red Wings have the cap space ($22 million) to make a strong offer. LeBrun has previously reported that Marner has interest in Detroit.

The X factor in bringing in Marner could be GM Steve Yzerman. Players know his history and reputation and often respond to his direct approach.

More important, it’s late May. He doesn’t become a free agent until July 1.  Situations and perspectives will change by then.

Red Wings prospect goalie Rudy Guimond (169th, 2023) didn’t play in the Moncton Wildcats’ 3-2 overtime loss to the London Knights at the Memorial Cup. The Wildcats opted to use the more experienced Mathis Rousseau in net. He stopped 45 of 48 shots.
