Red Wings Among Suitors For Czech Goaltender

Several teams pursuing Postava

The Detroit Red Wings are among the NHL teams reportedly seeking to get the name of Czech goalie Michal Postava on a contract.

It’s no secret that Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman isn’t all that happy with his club’s goaltending depth.

“We need the goalies to stop the puck more,” was Yzerman’s blunt assessment of his club’s netminders. “Overall I think as a team our save percentage percentage was near the bottom third of the league, 22nd or somewhere rough in there.”

Yzerman is dead accurate in that assessment. Detroit’s team save percentage of .889 was 22nd in the NHL during the 2024-25 regular season.

“We need to improve that. And that’s – I’m not trying to be sarcastic – why we’ve got to get better goaltending. Whether that’s with (veteran returnees) Peter Mrazek, Cam (Talbot) and or Alex (Lyon), or we go out and do something, we’ll look to upgrade that position.”

Red Wings Looking To Improve Goalie Depth

It would certainly appear that the Red Wings are pursuing that upgrade. And since the pool of available NHL UFA goalies is going to be thin come July 1, he appears to be casting his eye on available European goalies.

Already, Detroit has been linked to Arvid Holm of Rogle. He was named top goaltender in the Swedish League this season. Now, the Red Wings are also being reported as among the NHL teams pursuing Czech netminder Michal Postava.

In his first season in the Czech Extraliga, Postava backstopped Kometa Brno to the title.

The way that Czech opponents talk about Postava reminds you of the manner in which another Czech goalie who played for the Red Wings, Dominik Hasek, could get into the minds of shooters.

“I think he has some kind of aura around him,” Pardubice forward Jan Mandat told Czech website iDENES Sport. “Hats off to what he managed in his first Extraliga season. He absolutely deserves the title.

“He is a specific goalkeeper, he goes out a lot and can make players uneasy. At first you wonder how much space he has offered you and suddenly he is there. He is a great goalkeeper and he covers a lot just by standing in goal. He doesn’t have to make any major saves.”

Just 23, Postava posted a 21-save shutout in Game 7 of the final series. His playoff save percentage was .940.

Along with the Red Wings, the Edmonton Oilers, Utah Mammoth and Seattle Kraken are also reportedly chasing Postava.

Yzerman has been searching for a go-to goalie since taking over as Red Wings GM in 2019. Eight different goalies have played the most games in a season for the team during Detroit’s nine-season playoff drought.

“You look at the best teams in the league, generally they have like a real horse that they can ride there in net on a regular basis,” Yzerman said. “We’re not in that position yet.

“We’re hopeful to be there one day, whether that’s with our draft picks or to go look elsewhere for that guy.”
