The Daily: Walleye Chase Title with Detroit Goalies; Nelson Update

Jan Bednar, Red Wings prospect, walleye

The Toledo Walleye, with Detroit Red Wings-connected goalies leading the way, will play in the ECHL’s Kelly Cup Finals championship series starting Saturday against the Trois-Rivières Lions.

Red Wings draft pick Jan Bednar (6-2, 2.52, .908) and Detroit prospect Carter Gylander have split Walleye goaltending duties throughout the playoffs. Bednar is under contract to the Grand Rapids Griffins and Gylander (6-1, 2.59, .902) has a two-way NHL deal.

The best-of-seven series features the first two games at Toledo’s Huntington Center, followed by three at the Lions’  Colisée Vidéotron, and then two more (if needed) back in Toledo.

The Walleye have never won the Kelly Cup, but they have reached the Final twice (2019 and 2022). The team’s last championship came in 1994 when it captured the Riley Cup title.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Who will be available at No. 13 when it’s the Red Wings turn at the 2025 NHL draft? DHN tries to answer that question.

Ex-Detroit prospect Albin Grewe tells Swedish media he’s not a psychopath, even though his playing style gets him in trouble now and then.

Former Detroit coach Jeff Blashill hopes to take what he learned about winning and apply it to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Red Wings Extra

Don’t overlook Amadeus Lombardi as a candidate to be brought up to the Red Wings at some point in the 2025-26 season. With 40 points in 44 games, Lombardi owned a scoring rate equivalent to 31-goal, 65-point season over a 72-game AHL schedule. What the Red Wings appreciate about Lombardi is you notice him all of the time because of his work ethic.
