The Daily: Walman Stanley Cup Taunt Goes Viral; Sturm to Boston

One reason why the Detroit Red Wings traded defenseman Jake Walman is that they didn’t always appreciate how he conducted himself.
Now Walman is playing for the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final and his action in Game 1 has created a social media stir. He was caught on camera laughing at Florida fourth line center Tomas Nosek after he was penalized for delay of game (accidently shooting the puck over the plexi-glass) in overtime. It led to the winning power play goal.
Walman and Nosek are both ex-Red Wings, although they didn’t ever play together.
The two teams play Game 2 tonight in Edmonton. Will the Panthers respond to the Walman’taunt?

The Edmonton Journal had a headline using the phrase: Don’t Poke the Bear.
The story looked at whether the defending champion Panthers could use this as added motivation.

Respected Sportsnet Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman didn’t see it that way,
Edmonton is making a point of saying, ‘Normally, you guys are the ones who set the physical and verbal tone. You get others you get under other skin. We’re coming at you with this too.’ They’re saying, ‘We’re not letting Florida do all the talking. We’re doing some of the talking here too.’ ”

As we reported recently, Red Wings defense prospect Eemil Viro has made his departure from North America official by signing a two-year contract with Malmo of the Swedish Hockey League. Expressen confirmed the deal. Viro played for the Grand Rapids Griffins in 2024-25.
“We have been watching Eemil for a long time and we think he fits our way of playing,” Malmo Sports Director Oscar Alsenfelt told Expressen. “Eemil is a loyal player on defense and even though he hasn’t produced a lot of points, we hope he can play a little more in our environment and also contribute on offense, says Oscar Alsenfelt.

I now understand a bit more. Yzerman didn’t like that Walman conducted himself as a winner. No place for that on his team.
