Brad Marchand says he will concentrate on his NHL future after the Stanley Cup Final.

First things first.

However, NHL general managers are thinking about Marchand’s future today.

With the July 1 free agent launch almost three weeks away, NHL teams, including the Detroit Red Wings, are already prioritizing their UFA list. Today, DHN details the pros and cons of pursuing Marchand in a paywall story. To subscribe to your DHN+ stories, click here:

We will explain whether Detroit has realistic shot at Marchand.

At 37, Marchand is older than other high profile UFAs. But that isn’t all bad because it means teams don’t have to offer the same long-term commitment they will have to offer with some others.

Red Wings in Case You Missed It

The NHL is making a scoring change on the last goal Gordie Howe scored in the league. It comes 45 years after it happened. Bob Duff has the details.

Ex-Detroit player Dominik Kubalik says he has clause in his Swiss League that allows him to leave the deal if he receives an NHL offers.

Former Detroit player Igor Larionov, now coaching the KHL team in St. Petersburg, is requesting that the Montreal Canadiens send rookie sensation Ivan Demidov back to the KHL. Yea, that’s not going to happen.

Red Wings Extra

When you factor how free agent signings, or trades, could change the the Red Wings this summer, don’t forget to project Marco Kasper’s improvement. He had 19 goals and 18 assists last season.  But he was a much different player over the last six to eight weeks of the season. Kasper had 14 points (nine goals, five assists) in his last 18 games. That’s a scoring rate of .78 points per game. That rate translates to 63 points over 82 games. He was second on the team (behind Moritz Seider) with 156 hits. Kasper looked beastly for Austria at the World Championships. His growth as a player will make Detroit’s offense more productive.

Florida: The Panthers are getting plenty of offense from their defense. The Red Wings are hoping to say that after they make changes to their defense. Florida Panthers.

Montreal: The Canadians might be interested in Justin Carbonneau with one of their first-round draft picks. The Red Wings might be interested in Carbonneau at No. 13. That’s before the Habs select. Montreal Canadiens.

Pittsburgh: Dave Molinari looks at who the Penguins should be hiring as Dan Muse’s assistants. This could be critical. Pittsburgh Penguins.

San Jose: SJHN compared the fitness testing of 2025 prospect Michael Misa to the fitness testing Macklin Celebrini recorded last year at the NHL combine. The results are interesting. The Sharks are likely to draft Misa with the No. 2 pick later this month. San Jose Sharks.

Vegas: The Golden Knights’ offseason moves could be impacted by Alex Pietrangelo’s health status. Vegas Golden Knights.
