If Michal Postava turns out to be an elite goalie for the Detroit Red Wings, they’re going to want to send a thank you card to one of the Anaheim Ducks.

And no, we don’t mean to Detroit GM Steve Yzerman’s buddy Pat Verbeek. The Ducks GM left the Red Wings to take over in Anaheim. In this instance, though, it was one of his players who was touting the Red Wings as Postava’s best bet.

The Czech netminder, who was signing a two-year entry level contract as a free agent with the Red Wings on Tuesday, made the choice of Detroit over a team currently playing in the Stanley Cup final.

Postava’s final decision came down to the Red Wings, or the Edmonton Oilers.

“I had offers from both teams,” Postava told Czech website iSport. “The final decision was up to me.”

When it came time to choose, Postava logically sought out an opinion from his advisor Jiri Hamal.

“I talked to my agent,” Postava said. “And (Anaheim goalie and fellow Czech) Lukas Dostal also gave me advice.”

Dostal’s words of wisdom? Don the winged wheel.

“He said that Detroit might be better for me,” Postava said.

Postava Sees Opportunity With Red Wings

Looking at how erratic Stuart Skinner has been for the Oilers in the playoffs, coupled with the fact his backup is journeyman pro and former Red Wings goalie Calvin Pickard, you might’ve perhaps thought that Postava would be leaning toward signing with Edmonton.

However, his analysis of the situation was completely different. He was looking at the Red Wings goalies instead. He took note of the fact that both of Detroit’s netminders – Cam Talbot and Czech compatriot Petr Mrazek – are well into their 30s.

Postava’s contract calls for $975,00 a season in the NHL and $85,000 per year in the minor leagues.

Postava, 23, who backstopped Kometa Brno to the Czech Extraliga title as a rookie, is fully expecting to be playing next season for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

“I am happy that the negotiations with Detroit were successfully concluded,” Postava stated on Brno’s website. “The NHL is a dream for every player and I would like to fight for my chance.

“I am grateful to Kometa for giving me a chance last season. It was a big leap for me, but now I have to deal with another big challenge. As I said after the title, it was a fairy tale that continues for me.”
