Red Wings Prospect Staying Put
Guimond decommits from Yale

Things couldn’t have gone much better for Detroit Red Wings prospect Rudy Guimond after he was making the move to play in the QMJHL for the Moncton Wildcats.
During the 2024–2025 regular season, Guimond went 16–0. He would post an impressive 1.73 goals against average (GAA), a .940 save percentage and three shutouts. Guimond established a new CHL record for consecutive wins with 24 to start a career. Then he was 8-1 in the playoffs as Moncton won the QMJHL title and was reaching the Memorial Cup semifinal.
Is it any wonder then why he mght be opting for a redux?

The Wildcats were announcing on the weekend that Guimond is decommitting from Yale and will be staying to play another season in Moncton.
“I am super excited to announce that I am coming back to Moncton next year,” Guimond said in a statement on the team’s website. “I’ve always believed in long-term development and that I have lots of room for improvement in getting ready for the next stage of my career.
“I’m just getting started! I can’t wait to be back in the Avenir Centre for another season!”
Red Wings Pick Will Be No. 1 For Wildcats
Last season, Guimond was arriving in Moncton from the USHL Cedar Rapids Rough Riders in November. He was sharing the net with Mathis Rousseau. Rousseau has left Moncton to play NCAA hockey for the Maine Black Bears. That’s leaving Guimond to be the go-to goalie for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats were equally thrilled by the thought of having Guimond back for a second season.
“He was an integral part of our group’s success last season and now he has the opportunity to establish himself as one of the most impactful goaltenders in the CHL,” said Taylor MacDougall, Moncton’s general manager and director of hockey operations. “Rudy has showcased elite composure and consistency.”
Added Wildcats goalie coach Antoine Samuel: “He played a big role in our championship year and we know how much he can bring to our group going into next season.”
Guimond Status Could Present Problem For Red Wings
How many goalies under contract are too many? The Red Wings may be facing the notion of answering that question as early as next season.
Detroit will already have two prospect goalies under contract in Sebastian Cossa and Michal Postava. They’ll have to make a decision on whether to re-sign Carter Gylander. As well, both Guimond and likely Trey Augustine, entering his junior year at Michigan State, will be looking to turn pro. They’ll also need to make a decision on 2024 draftee Landon Miller of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Had Guimond stuck with his commitment to Yale, the Red Wings would’ve be left with years before having to make a decision on his future.
