The NHL buyout period usually creates news because a couple or three useful players end up in the free agent marketplace and some teams gain cap space to increase their free agent buying power.

But the current buyout period hasn’t given us much to discuss thus far.  Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday that Chicago defenseman T.J. Brodie was placed on waivers for the purpose of buying out his contract. He would be the first buyout since the buyout period started (48 hours after the Stanley Cup was awarded).

No word about whether the Red Wings are going to buy out Justin Holl, or maybe Vladimir Tarasenko.

Keep in mind that the buyout period goes until June 30th at 5 p.m. It makes some sense for teams to wait to see what might develop in terms of trades or transactions that impact their buyout decision. Joe Veleno was listed as a potential buyout for the Blackhawks, but they ended up trading him Saturday morning.

Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman reported the Red Wings have interest in New York Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson.

Former Red Wings player Joe Veleno is now heading to his third NHL team. DHN has the details.

The Florida Panthers believe they can re-sign their three top three UFAs. That would be bad news for teams looking to sign one of those, including the Red Wings,

How thin is the NHL UFA goaltending market? It’s thin enough that the No. 3 goal on TSN’s goalie list is Alex Lyon, the goalie the Red Wings are saying goodbye to. New Jersey’s Jake Allen is the top netminder, ranked 10th on TSN’s List of Top 50 UFAs. Calgary’s Dan Vladar is the second goalie, ranked 24th, followed by Lyon (40th) and Vegas Golden Knights’ Ilya Samsonov (49th).
