The Red Wings franchise will celebrate 100 years of existence in 2026.

The Detroit Red Wings won’t officially turn 100 until late next year, but that isn’t stopping the team from getting the party started.

Wednesday, the club officially unveiled its centennial logo and began launch of what will be a celebration of the club’s 100 years of NHL accomplishments throughout the 2025-26 season. The centenary party will continue into the 2026-27 campaign, with a signature event on November 18, 2026.

That night, the Red Wings will play host to the Boston Bruins at Little Caesars Arena. That game will be played 100 years to the day of the franchise’s first NHL game. On November 18, 1926, the Bruins defeated the then Detroit Cougars 2-0 at Border Cities Arena in Windsor, Ontario.

The team was renamed the Falcons in 1930, finally becoming the Red Wings two years later when James Norris took over ownership of the club.

Red Wings Most Successful US-Based NHL Franchise

With 11 Stanley Cup victories, the Red Wings have won more NHL titles than any American-based franchise. The Wings were the fourth US-based NHL club to win the Cup in 1935-36. By winning again the following season, Detroit became the first US NHL team to win back-to-back championships.

From 1948-49 through 1954-55, Detroit would finish first overall in the NHL for a record seven consecutive seasons. That’s a mark which has never been equaled. The Wings have finished atop the NHL standings 18 times.

The Wings are fourth all-time in the NHL with 3,136 regular-season wins. There are 58 NHLers who either suited up for, coached or managed the Red Wings who are enhshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Mr. Hockey himself, Gordie Howe, played 25 seasons for the team. That’s an NHL record for a player’s longest tenure with one team. Howe is the holder of franchise career marks for goals (786) and points (1,809). Current Detroit GM Steve Yzerman is the standard bearer for single-season goals (65) and points (155) marks by a Red Wings player.
