Another member of the Detroit Red Wings’ restricted free agent group is under contract. The club and forward Jonatan Berggren are in agreement on a one-year contract with an AAV of $1.825 million.

Last season, playing mostly in a bottom-six role, Berggren was posting 12-12-24 numbers in 75 games for Detroit. The Swedish left shot right-winger has accounted for 29 goals in 154 NHL games, all with the Red Wings. He was finishing the season playing on the top forward line with captain Dylan Larkin and team scoring leader Lucas Raymond.

“I feel like this season I have become a better two-way player,” Berggren said at the end of last season. “Like I know the offense will come and it makes it easier when you play with those guys. That’s really skillful.”

Red Wings Want Berggren To Seize The Moment

This is the second consecutive one-year contract signed by Berggren. The Red Wings brass are making it abundantly clear to the 24-year-old Swede that they want him to step up and forcibly grab more significant ice time with his performance.

“Ultimately, at the end of the day, he and only he is responsible for his results,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. “We can help him. We can do all the things that we believe can push him in the right direction, but he’s got to get it out of himself.

“And I think he’s a real smart player. I think he’s got all the tools to play. He’s just consistently got to put it together. And self evaluation, I think is real important for all players, Bergie included.

“What do we need to see? Well, we need to see him competitive, tip the scales offensively a little bit and maybe not so much defensively. Let’s see some of that. But we’ve been asking for that for a lot of the year.”

McLellan believes Berggren’s skillset makes him more suited for a role among the top nine forwards. But he won’t be simply handed that spot. It’s up to him to earn it with more consistent performance.

“You’re also a victim sometimes of circumstances,” McLellan said. “Where you play, how much you play in the lineup. I don’t think that Bergey fits well on a fourth line. I think Bergey’s much better in the top nine, but you also have to capture the moment when you’re there. And I’d like to see him capture this moment.”

Earlier Monday, defenseman Albert Johansson was agreeing to a two-year deal. Now that Berggren has signed, forward Elmer Soderblom is Detroit’s last remaining RFA.
