The worst-kept secret among the Detroit Red Wings crop of impending UFAs was that Patrick Kane was going to be staying with the team. It’s now official. The future Hall of Famer and the Red Wings were agreeing Monday to a one-year contract that is for an AAV of $3 million.

As recently as Saturday, Detroit GM Steve Yzerman was expressing virtual certainty that he’d be getting Kane signed before he became a UFA on July 1.

“I still expect us to get a deal done with Patrick,” Yzerman said at the time.

Already acknowledging that he’ll be looking to upgrade the offensive potency of his top-six forwards when the unrestricted free agency period opens Tuesday at noon ET, Yzerman could ill-afford to let Kane get away. It would’ve left him with two holes to fill among that top-six group.

Last season, Kane was fourth on the team in goals (21) and points (59) and tied for third in assists (38). It amounted to the best offensive production by the 36-year-old left shot right-winger since the 2021-22 season.

Kane admitted that playing for Todd McLellan after he took over as Red Wings coach on Dec. 26 was an enjoyable experience. It certainly was playing a role in his decision to remain in Detroit.

“I mean familiarity, playing within the system, understanding how he coaches, playing with a lot of guys in the room, my role on the team, role on the power play,” Kane listed as the qualities he respects about McLellan. “I think that’s all a lot of positive stuff here that I experienced over the last little while.”

Red Wings Give Kane Plenty Of Bonus Opportunities

While Kane’s base salary is $3 million, the pact is offering him the opportunity to more than double that money through a raft of built in bonuses.

He’ll get an additional $2.5 million for playing 10 games. Another $250,000 each arrives with the 30 and 50-game benchmarks.

If the Red Wings make the playoffs, add another $500,000 stipend to Kane’s payday. And there’s an additional $250,000 each for Round 1 and Round 2 triumphs.
