It didn’t create the buzz that re-signing of Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad and Brad Marchand create, but the Florida Panthers also re-signed former Red Wings player Tomas Nosek.

Former Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry also signed with with Florida.

After the 32-year-old Czech helped the Panthers win the Stanley Cup, he generated a heartfelt video in which he thanked the folks in Grand Rapids and Detroit for treating him well when he launched his pro career in North America. The Nosek video story made an impact far and wide.

Coach Paul Maurice is known for appreciating the work of fourth liners such as Nosek. That’s probably why he accepted a minimal $775,000 one-year contract to come back to Florida. He turned down raises elsewhere.

Red Wings In Case You Missed

Detroit legendary center Alex Delvecchio has died at age 93. He centered Gordie Howe after Sid Abel.

Goalie John Gibson is excited to join the Red Wings for their quest to return to the playoffs and compete for the Stanley Cup.

As expected, the Red Wings didn’t land any high profile UFAs Tuesday. But they did sign James van Riemsdyk who has a proven history of scoring consistency.

Red Wings Extra

As the Red Wings begin a more concerted effort exploring the NHL trade market to improve their offense, they have $15.34 million in cap space. To underline how much cap space that is out there this offseason, consider that eight other teams have more cap space to spend than Detroit. Monday’s signings of James van Riemsdyk ($1 million), Jacob Bernard-Docker ($875,000), Ian Mitchell ($775,000) and John Leonard ($775,000) totaled only $3.425 million. Mitchell and Leonard project as signings primarily for Grand Rapids.
