The Daily: Petry Excited By Panthers Call; Why Augustine Stayed
Former Detroit player Jeff Petry didn’t need to think about it when the Florida Panthers called to ask if he wanted to join their roster for the 2025-26 NHL season.
He has been trying to win a Stanley Cup for his entire 15-season NHL career, and he’s not going to find a better opportunity than joining a Panthers team looking for a third consecutive Stanley Cup title. It’s hard to believe, but Petry, 37, has only been in the playoffs four times in his career.
In George Richards’ story at Florida Hockey Now, Petry said reaching the Stanley Cup Final with Montreal in the 2021 Covid season, and losing to Tampa, makes him want the prize even more.
“That was also an important part of my decision (to sign with Florida), wanting to be in the playoffs, wanting to compete for a Stanley Cup again,’’ Petry said.Â
“And you know that feeling of being really close in Montreal, and then losing in the Final, that was a tough feeling. I always said before my career is over, I want to be able to be in that position again, and be on a team that can compete for a Stanley Cup. And I think coming to Florida gives me a very good opportunity to do that.’’

Florida is definitely not going to three-peat if they play Petry. Good riddance.
Not true . There are worse guys than him. He has close to 1,000 NHL games. He must have e done something g right. Maybe he was stuck on a bad team!
Playing for the Wings he was a turnover machine and pylon. He should have retired
Petry is a bottom pairing defenseman at this point in his career. The Red Wings were forced to play him too far up in the line up and he struggled. He will do a good job for the Panthers.
No surprise Augustine staying at MSU. Does not want to be buried in the Ding a Lings system. Smart move by the young man. Stay in school and hopefully next year there will be a new regime in Detroit.
If they run back guys like Holl, again this year, that’s nothing but a slap in the face of the fans This roster is so poor they are one key injury away from surpassing Buffalo into the cellar. Look around the league especially the Atlantic division….teams have loaded up the rosters.
