Where Have All of the Red Wings’ Russians Gone (+)

The Red Wings don't have a Russian player today, but Dimitri Buchelnikov could be on the team next season

The Detroit Red Wings organization that gave the NHL the “Russian Five” doesn’t currently have a Russian player on its roster after trading Vladimir Tarasenko to the Minnesota Wild.

Detroit’s fascination with Russian players ended when Sergei Fedorov signed with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, July 17, 1993.

The Red Wings haven’t drafted many Russians  in recent years. From 2015-2024, Detroit’s only Russian draft picks are Kirill Tyutyayev (2019) and Dimitri Buchenikov (2022).  But highly skilled Buchelnikov (CSKA Moscow) is possibly coming to North America next summer. Plus, the Red Wings drafted Russian defenseman Nikita Tyurin (fifth round, 140th) last month. Maybe things are changing.
