The Daily: Kadri Controls His Fate for 11 More Months; Elmer’s Brother Signs

Published

on

Nazem Kadri, UFA

The Nazem Kadri no movement clause means he controls his destiny for the next 11 months. Next July, his protection shifts to a 13-team no trade list.

That explains why it’s believed Kadri might waive his no movement clause now while he can say exactly where he wants to go.  In fairness, the Flames don’t want to trade him because they believe they can make the playoffs. But he will be 35 in October and has four years remaining on a contract with a $7 million AAV. With Kadri coming off a 35-goal season, his value has never been higher.

“By all accounts, Calgary — which missed the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs by barely a whisper — wants to be competitive again next year and Kadri would certainly help with that,” Dixon writes. “On the other hand, if the Flames can acquire players in a younger demographic who have the potential to help for the next decade, you can see how moving Kadri might make sense for GM Craig Conroy.”

Sportsnet’s Ryan Dixon offers five possible destinations for Kadri that might work if he is willing to leave Calgary. Not surprising, Detroit is not on that list.

The five possibilities are the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Kadri grew up a Canadiens fan, and he previously played for Toronto and Colorado.  His blend of talent and snarl could make him the missing piece in New Jersey and the Hurricanes clearly are a team on the rise.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Former Red Wings player Jakub Vrana not ready to give up on playing in the NHL.

Are the Dallas Stars really going to trade Jason Robertson? One long-time writer pegs the possibility at 50-50. The Red Wings are presumed to be interested in Robertson who has scored 151 goals over the past four years.

Remember 2019 Detroit second round pick Robert Mastrosimone? He is still in the AHL. Mastrosimone recently signed a deal with the Charlotte Checkers. This is in Bob Duff’s round-up of the whereabouts of former Detroit picks.

Defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov, acquired by the Grand Rapids Griffins late last season, signed a one-year contract with Abbotsford in the AHL. Still unsigned: Tim Gettinger and Cross Hanas. The latter was a Red Wings’ draft pick who didn’t receive a qualifying offer.
