Age can diminish an athlete’s physical tools, but it doesn’t have to erode his desire to succeed. Detroit Red Wings Patrick Kane, 37, proves that when he speaks about his goal to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.

“The one thing that’s kind of missing is a gold in best-on-best, right?” Kane told NHL.com on Tuesday. “It would be fun to have that opportunity.”

The 2026 Olympics in Italy will be the first time NHL players compete in the Olympics since 2014. Kane played for the USA in those Games in Russia. He was also a member of the U.S. squad that won the silver medal in Vancouver.

Kane wasn’t selected for the Four Nations Faceoff, and that now motivates him to push for the Olympic selection. Given his production level (106 points in 122 games) since coming to Detroit, it’s a realistic goal. Staying healthy is probably his key.

If you’re playing well and somebody else is playing well, and they take somebody else, well, you know, so be it,” Kane said. “I put my best foot forward, and I did all I could to try to make the team. I was happy that I finished well last year and kind of got myself back into maybe the conversation again, but we’ll see.”

Red Wings in Case You Missed It

Past and future Red Wings will have a say on CSKA’s season in the KHL. Daniel Sprong scored the game-winner on Friday.

Among Anton Johansson’s pluses as a Detroit prospect defenseman is his physical prowess. But he went too far on Friday and drew a match play penalty in an SHL game.

Paywall story: If you look at Detroit’s roster and salary cap picture, it seems likely they are still hunting for a proven defensemen to play in their top four. To read DHN+ stories, subscribe here:
