The Daily: No One Wanted to Try out for Red Wings; Genborg’s Hot Start

The Detroit Red Wings didn’t seem to be an attractive option for free agents this summer and GM Steve Yzerman said players even turned down Professional Tryout offers (PTO).

The Red Wings have some undrafted free agents, but don’t have a single veteran player trying out.

“We’ve talked to some players, agents, and offered them some opportunities,” Yzerman said.  “Some have gone to other spots, and a couple of guys still, to my knowledge, haven’t accepted a PTO.

The Red Wings have had some luck with PTOs. In 2023, Michael Hutchinson came to the Red Wings on a PTO and parlayed that into a two-way contract. He ended up being the insurance policy goalie in Grand Rapids.

Last season, the Detroit organization signed Austin Watson after he came to camp on a PTO. He had a strong season for the Grand Rapids Griffins in terms of offensive production, protecting his teammates, and mentoring younger players.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

James van Riemsdyk isn’t in Detroit’s training camp yet because he’s dealing with a personal matter.

Former Red Wings player Robby Fabbri is in the Pittsburgh training camp on a PTO.

GM Steve Yzerman isn’t predicting playoffs for Detroit. Predictions are not his game.

Red Wings Extra

Eddie Genborg (44th, 2025) boasts a goal and two assists for three points in his first three games for Timra IK in the Swedish Hockey League.
