Red Wings Hamonic Kept The Faith
Veteran UFA signed with Detroit in August
Even though it appeared that the entire NHL had lost faith in him, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Travis Hamonic never lost his faith.
The veteran rearguard became an unrestricted free agent on July 1. An entire month passed, and no team called.
It was enough to make an ordinary fellow give up hope. But Hamonic isn’t an ordinary fellow. He’s always put stock in his faith. As the days passed without a contract resolution, Hamonic kept the faith.
“This is kind of the first time that I’ve been through this process,” Hamonic said. “Every other time when I have hit free agency, it’s kind of happened really quickly.
“So, I just kind of took every day in stride, respected the process, had good conversations, and just kind of truthfully, my faith is important to me.
“My belief in God is important to me. Knowing that God’s got a plan for me and my family for where we should be was of utmost importance and a calming presence in my life.
“I always felt like things were going to happen the way they’re supposed to happen, and that’s what I believe in my life.”

In his opinion, landing in Detroit was an ideal situation in which Hamonic feels he can have success.
“It was kind of like a whole package thing where I felt like it was a great opportunity for me professionally to join a team, to help push and to continue to develop as a professional,” Hamonic said. “Even at this stage of my career, it’s important for my family to be in a place that seems like an unbelievable place to raise a young family and to really grow, away from the rink as a family unit.
“So it hit a lot of boxes.”
Red Wings Were Looking For Defensive Depth
Certainly, Detroit GM Steve Yzerman was putting his faith in different metrics when deciding to offer Hamonic a contract. He’d been trying to sign or trade for a right-shot defenseman.
“There was nothing that evolved there,” Yzerman said. “We felt it was important to bring in another veteran just to help our young group of guys.”
While continuing his search, Yzerman kept coming back to Hamonic.
“We watched Travis play a lot in Ottawa last year through injuries,” Yzerman said. “He played in their top four for significant stretches and performed very well.”
The Strengths of Hamonic’s Game Are Subtle
Hamonic isn’t going to be providing any highlight-reel plays. In fact, it’s best for his game if you really don’t notice him.

Hamonic saw his second action of the NHL preseason in Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Penguins at Pittsburgh. He delivered two hits, blocked three shots, and was minus-one in 17:50 of ice time.
“He’s just a veteran guy who’s steady defensively, who plays with some edge,” Yzerman said.
