After the Detroit Red Wings’ ugly performance in their season-opening loss to the Montreal Canadiens, two consecutive wins against the Toronto Maple Leafs seems almost too hard to believe.

Axel Sandin Pellikka was nine, and Steve Yzerman was only 17 months into his tenure as the Tampa Bay Lightning general manager the last time the Maple Leafs won back-to-back games against Toronto. It was 2014.

Cam Talbot needed 38 saves to help Detroit beat Toronto 3-2 on Mason Appleton’s goal in the final minute of regulation.

“That’s what good teams do on the road,” Talbot said. “We’ve put together a couple of good ones here, and we knew this was going to be a
tough one, and we’re going to need everybody.”

The testing continues on Wednesday with a home game against the Florida Panthers and then the Tampa Bay Lightning comes to down Friday.  The Edmonton Oilers come in on Sunday. What will Detroit’s record be on Monday morning?

Red Wings in Case You Missed It

The Red Wings expect to know more about Lucas Raymond’s injury today.

Rookies Axel Sandin Pellikka, Emmitt Finnie, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard are building on their training camp excellence.

Cam Talbot’s goaltending helped Detroit steal a game from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
