The Detroit Red Wings are making the playoffs. Book it.

History says it’s going to happen.

Tuesday’s 5-2 road victory over the Blues in St. Louis improved Detroit’s season mark to 7-3. It’s the best start to a campaign by the Red Wings since going 7-2-1 to open the 2010-11 season.

This is the 15th time in the club’s 100-year history that they’ve sat with a record of 7-3 or better through the 10-game point of an NHL season. On each of the previous 14 occasions, the regular season conclusion included a playoff berth for the Red Wings.

Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin was more focused on the team’s most recent performance than what it might mean in the long run.

“I think a good road game out of our team and something that we’ve been looking to do,” Larkin said on the team’s website. “And the (key) point is a total team win. I think all the lines were good, all the D pairs played really solid, and Gibby (goaltender John Gibson) was great.

“We had a great third period as well. So a lot of positives and a really good way to start the trip.”

Fast Starts Like This Serve Red Wings Well

Larkin has sought to stress that all they’ve done is get off to a good start. At this point, though, it’s become a start that historical precedence shows serves the Red Wings well. Beyond making it to the postseason, a launch to the season of this magnitude has often proven to be a continuing reward for the team.

Nine times when the Red Wings opened a campaign 7-3 or better, they wound up the season in first place. Five times, they’ve gone on to win the Stanley Cup. Three other seasons saw the Wings reach the Stanley Cup final.
