As roller coaster rides go, the 4-3 shootout win by the Detroit Red Wings over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday was Six Flags, Cedar Point, and Space Mountain all rolled into one.

Up 3-1 with three minutes left in regulation time, the Red Wings surrendered two goals to Kings forward Corey Perry with LA goalie Darcy Kuemper on the bench for an extra attacker. Heading into overtime, it looked as though the extra point was lost when Kevin Fiala scored during the extra frame. However, after review, the goal was overturned on goaltender interference.

In the shootout, Lucas Raymond scored for the Red Wings. Meanwhile, Detroit goalie Cam Talbot, facing his old team, foiled all three Los Angeles shooters.

DeBrincat Keeps Rolling For Red Wings

Traditionally, Alex DeBrincat has been a streaky scorer. When he went the first eight games without a goal, Detroit coach Todd McLellan didn’t push the panic button.

“You know, scorers, pure scorers, which I consider Cat, you go in spells where you don’t score, but you’re still getting a lot of chances,” McLellan said. “If you’re not a real true scorer, you go in spells, and you’re not getting chances. You don’t know when it’s going to come again.

“Cat had more chances in the first 10 games this year than any 10-game segment, I think last year that I coached, and it just didn’t go in for him. But he stuck with it.”

DeBrincat tallied on the power play to pull Detroit into a 1-1 tie in the second period. He’s now scored in three straight games. DeBrincat also picked up an assist. He has 12 points through 11 games.

DeBrincat was also philosophical about his slow start.

“Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t,” DeBrincat said. “So just got to keep going, keep shooting.”

Kasper Pots A Pair

Another Red Wing off to a slow start to the season in terms of offensive productivity is center Marco Kasper. His stat line entering Thursday’s game showed one goal and no assists.

Kasper scored two goals on Thursday to enable Detroit to fashion its 3-1 lead.

“I think through hard work and doing the right things, you get on the good side of things,” Kasper said. “And that’s just what I’m trying to do.”

Getting both DeBrincat and Kasper going is vital to the Red Wings, with Patrick Kane still out due to an upper-body injury.

This team just keeps winning. Games they would have lost last year. Being without Kane. Too many kids. They just win. Hopefully whatever mojo from the hockey gods they have going they keep going with it.

The defence is better overall. Finally. And no Husso etc.

Watching these guys you have to keep the baby aspirins close. They are hard on the old ticker. Great recovery.

Chill Distiller

That was the best defensive effort I’ve seen from Bergy. He was the most notable forward on his line.
