Patrick Kane is certain about the uncertainty regarding whether he’ll be back in the lineup for the Detroit Red Wings as they return home to face the New York Rangers on Friday.

“We’ll see,” was Kane’s answer to reporters on whether he’ll be playing on Friday. “I think I’m feeling pretty good.”

Kane has been out for the past nine games due to an arm injury he suffered when he went crashing into the boards in a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was able to participate in a full practice on Thursday for the first time since the injury.

“Obviously, it’s nice to get back into practice with the team,” Kane said. “Other than that, I feel pretty good. And we’ll go from there, see how it is tomorrow. But I don’t think there’s any real decision on when I’m back or anything like that.”

Mild Downturn In Red Wings Offense Minus Kane

There’s been a mild drop-off in offensive output by the club minus Kane. The team was netting 3.2 goals per game (GPG) in the five games with him. The Wings are scoring 3.1 GPG in nine games without him.

The power play is operating at about the same rate. However, of late, both the offense and the power play have hit walls.

Through the past three games, Detroit has scored just five goals. That’s 1.66 GPG. Meanwhile, over that same span, the power play is 1-for-11 (9%).

Red Wings coach Todd McLellan clearly notices a difference without Kane’s unique brand of creativity.

“Certainly the power play, he’s a guy that a lot of it runs through,” McLellan said. “He handles the puck well and sees things. He’s got the ability to play fast or slow.”

The coach is cautiously optimistic that one of his top players will be back in action this weekend.

“It looked good,” McLellan said of Kane’s practice. “I made contact with him a couple of times about how he felt. He said he felt pretty good, so I think that’s positive. But that decision will be made tomorrow when we get a little more information.”
