Punishing Hit by Red Wings Prospect Sparks Rally

There’s been a lot to like about Eddie Genborg since the Detroit Red Wings selected him 40th overall in the 2025 NHL entry draft. On the weekend, we came to find out that the young Swede might even have a little Bob Probert in him.

During his heyday with the Red Wings, when he reigned as the NHL’s toughest customer, Probert could turn the tide of a game with a timely fight or a punishing hit. And that’s exactly what Genborg did for Timra in Saturday’s SHL game against Frolunda.

In the first period, veteran Frolunda defenseman Christian Folin gathered the puck behind his net. Bearing down on the forecheck, Genborg lined up Folin and not only dislodged him from the puck, but he also knocked Folin off his feet.

“I’m just trying to run him over,” Genborg told Swedish broadcaster TV4.

The hit earned Genborg high praise from the broadcast crew.

“It’s not often you see Christian Folin get to go and brush off the snow after a close fight,” former NHLer Joel Lundqvist said. “It’s usually the other way around.”

Former SHL defenseman Almen Bibic was also full of praise for the 18-year-old Red Wings hopeful.

“I like this,” Bibic said. “He’s (an) 07 (birthday), a junior for another year, and he’s taking on one of the biggest mountains and he’s knocking him over.”

Folin, 34, shows 244 NHL games on his resume with the Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings, and Philadelphia Flyers. He’s 6-foot-2 and 187 pounds.

“I know he’s a mountain,” Genborg said. “First and foremost, I want to win the puck. He turns pretty quickly, and then I get a good chance to try to run over him.

“I see that he is prepared, but I succeeded this time.”

Even Folin had to praise his punisher

“It’s good that someone is fighting back,” Folin said. “I like it. That’s how it should be. It should be tough, and you can appreciate that.

“It’s absolutely right to continue as a forward there. Not everyone does that. There are some who just go after the puck. It’s fun to see.”

After falling behind 2-0, Timra rallied for a 4-2 victory.
