The Daily: Larkin Nets Meaningful Empty Netter; Solomon a Badger

Captain Dylan Larkin isn’t going to remember his 600th NHL point for its artistry but he may recall that it was an empty netter that had a measure of importance.

What Larkin appreciated about the tally with 30 second remaining in regulation was it was an insurance goal in a win that allowed his Detroit Red Wings to vault over the Boston Bruins to claim first place in the Atlantic Division.

“I think most importantly, (it) put the game away,” Larkin said. “Say what you want about them, but empty netters…they’re important. It’s not the prettiest goal for a milestone, but…”

He didn’t finish the thought, but Detroit fans know that the Red Wings have had issues closing out games. It was encouraging to see the Red Wings hold a one-goal lead for almost 30 minutes.

Larkin is the 11th player in Red Wings’ history to reach 600 points. He is the eighth Michigan-born NHLer to reach the 600-point mark, joining Mike Modano, Doug Weight, Brian Rolston, Mark Howe, Kevin Hatcher, David Legwand and Kyle Connor. The former University of Michigan player is the sixth member of the 2014 NHL Draft class to reach the 600-point mark, joining Leon Draisaitl,
David Pastrnak, Brayden Point, William Nylander and Sam Reinhart

“It means a lot to me that I’m able to put that jersey on and play in this building and be the captain,” Larkin said. “I think it’s special every day, but when you hit certain milestones, in a win, and a win where we move into first place, it is important.”

Detroit prospect Brent Solomon (109th, 2025) made his college choice official by signing his national letter of intent with the Wisconsin Badgers.  He’s a Sioux Falls Stampede forward who has enjoyed an exceptional launch to his NHL season. Solomon is no longer leading the league scoring race but is still among the Top 5 with 10 goals and 12 goals for 22 points in 18 games.
