This isn’t the 1970s when settling scores played a much bigger role in NHL competition than it does today. But you should make a mental note that the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings will meet again on March 8.

The Devils beat Detroit 4-3 Monday in New Jersey, and tempers were boiling by game’s end.

Devils-Red Wings ill will goes back to last season when Detroit’s Michael Rasmussen flattened Jack Hughes on a reverse check on an empty-net goal.

On Monday, tempers flaired when J.T. Compher took a penalty for a heavy hit on Devils captain Nico Hischier. Compher later fought Stefan Noesen for throwing that check.

In the third period, the Red Wings took exception to Jonas Siegenthaler’s hit that knocked Raymond to the ice. It took him some time to get up. No penalty was called.

Here is the hit story from the Devils’ perspective:

“I was joining the rush and turned around. I wanted to change and ran into him. And I mean, it wasn’t a very hard [hit],” Siegenthaler said. “I would say. But you know, he can act however he wants. I don’t think it was bad.”

It’s clear Detroit players don’t accept that version because when the buzzer sounded to end the game, everyone was involved in pushing, shoving and chirping on both sides.

Mark you calendars.

Definitely a cheap shot. But all the fault lies at the feet of Steve Yzerman. He keeps drafting softies and signing free agency softies. Nobody to blame but himself. The big boys on D and some of the forwards play like they are in a badminton tournament.

I was waiting for the pseudo tough guy ignorance, the Detroit fans always show.

Siegenthaler didn’t “accidentally” run into Raymond. He changed the direction in which he was skating and then threw a shoulder/arm into an unsuspecting and defenseless Raymond when the puck was nowhere close to him. But what pissed me off the most was JVR twice backing away from Siegenthaler near the end of the game. He’s been a big disappointment since his signing.

I agree. Again, I do not get Yzerman repeating Holland in the way of signing over-aged vets. Hamonic and JVR were not needed.

Tom Rady

He signs them because those are the free, agents he can get. Young in their prime free agents won’t come here until they start winning. It isn’t a lack of money, it’s a lack of winning. He has made one good trade in Debrincat. The rookies have been good we need more of them . The team defense I’d the biggest issue. You can’t play from behind all the time.

But do you think there is reason that is beneficial for such players? Hamonic has cost them goals. Why play him is one thing, but why sign him is another. There is nothing beneficial from these guys. In my view, this team was better off with MBN on it. I do not believe the Wings having all three of Copp, Compher, and Ras are necessary. Again, call-up MBN. Outside of Kasper, the younger players are doing well. Marco should be put back on the top line in order to help get him going. If that is not the case, they may send him down though I do not prefer to see that.

RW. You are right in all you post. Yzerman has been a completer failure . He signed very poor players, gave away other good players, hired Lalond and refuses to give the prospects in GR a chance. Tom you mention the Debrincat trade and you are right in that it is a great move, but this trade had much more to do with the Cat himself than some brilliant move by Yzerman. In fact Elliot Freedman of Sports Net Revealed on The Kyper & Bourne Show that the Ducks made a much better offer to Ottawa than Detroit with the condition they be able to talk with The Cat and have him sign a long term contract. He refused and handcuffed The Senators. One of the only decent signings the Y made was P Kane, but again this had much more to do with the Kane family and the Debrincat family being very close than a great move by Yzerman . All you had to do to see this was listen to Kane himself this past summer when he said that he didn’t want to move and take away his son’s best friend which is Debrincat’s son.
Oh and RW don’t worry about the red bars at the bottom of your posts. I get them all the time. This is the Yzerlickers like Charlie Brown and Chilly Willy. Haven’t got the gray matter to come up with a post of their own or the stones to post something. They just go around critiquing other’s posts.
