While no one is saying the Detroit Red Wings are the favorite to acquire defenseman Quinn Hughes, there is a consensus in the hockey world that the Red Wings will have a legitimate shot for a variety of reasons.

Respected insider Elliotte Friedman said as much recently.

The Red Wings have a variety of tradeable assets that would appeal to Vancouver, including players already in the NHL, high-level prospects and first round picks. Second, the Canucks and Red Wings have made a deal recently when the Red Wings moved Filip Hronek to Vancouver.

Finally, Detroit has the cap space and desire to re-sign Hughes to a whopping contract, and Hughes has a history in this state because he played at the University of Michigan and the U.S. National Team Development Program in Plymouth. His parents live in the area.

The general belief is the most likely scenario of a trade would still be to New Jersey because brothers Jack and Luke already play there.

It’s clear Detroit’s fan base is fired about the Red Wings making a push for Hughes.  There’s plenty of scenarios being floated, likely all of them rooted in speculation and not true negotiations.

What seems consistent in all of the speculation is that Marco Kasper, Axel Sandin-Pellikka or Nate Danielson could be in the deal or maybe two of those three, plus a first-round pick, second rounder and another player off the roster.

Again, this is rooted in speculation. Detroit Hockey Now has not confirmed that there are negotiations ongoing. What we have heard is the Canucks haven’t made up their mind who to trade immediately. It doesn’t sound as ifht anything is imminent.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Bob Duff writes about three improvements the Red Wings need to qualify for the playoffs.

Niklas Kronwall and Tomas Vanek to enter the IIHF Hall of Fame.

The Red Wings gave up a late tying goal and fell 6-5 in a shootout to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Detroit fans have seen this story before.

Red Wings Extra

With Patrick Kane registering his 359th career multi-point game, he moves past Mike Modano for the most by any U.S.-born NHL player.  In his 19th NHL season, Kane has averaged roughly 19 multi-point games per season. That is a staggering number. With 13 points in his last 12 games, Kane is certainly still making a reasonable case to be named to the U.S. Olympic team.
