Getting news out of Russia when it comes to Detroit Red Wings prospects is a lot like getting the truth out of a politician. Even when you do get it, you remain somewhat skeptical of its factual validity.

In this case, though, it appears that the news is indeed proving to be truthful. Red Wings prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov is out after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder. He’s not expected to return to action before February.

Buchelnikov has missed CSKA Moscow’s past four games. He most recently played on November 24 in a 4-1 loss to SKA St. Petersburg.

The 22-year-old left-winger is second on the team in goals (10) and points. Chosen 52nd overall by Detroit in the 2022  NHL entry draft, Buchelnikov is trailing only former Red Wings forward Daniel Sprong in team scoring. With 12-19-31 numbers, Sprong is ninth in the KHL scoring race.

Red Wings Pick To Play For Sweden

A second Red Wings prospect is heading to the IIHF World Junior Championship. Eddie Genborg was part of Sweden’s team that was announced on Friday.

There’s no surprise in this announcement. Genborg figures to play a key role for the Swedish team. He was skating on the country’s top line during a pre-tournament competition last month.

Playing for Timra in the SHL, Genborg is second on the club in goals (eight) and third in points (15). The 18-year-old right-winger was the 40th overall pick in the 2025 NHL entry draft.

Earlier in the week, Red Wings draftee Max Plante of Minnesota-Duluth was announced as part of the USA squad. He was Detroit’s second-round pick (47th overall) in the 2024  NHL entry draft.

Three Ex-Wings On Swedish Roster

Sweden’s senior national team is also scheduled to play in next week’s Swiss Hockey Games, and some familiar names to Detroit fans will be part of the lineup. Three former Red Wings players were selected to play for Sweden.

Defenseman Robert Hagg and forwards Jacob de la Rose and Christoffer Ehn are the former Wings who’ll be playing for the Swedish team.
