The two Detroit Red Wings prospects playing for their national teams at the World Junior Championships in Minnesota found the spotlight in the first day of competition.

Eddie Genborg (44th, 2025) assisted on the game-winning goal in Sweden’s 3-2 win against Slovakia and Minnesota native Max Plante (47th, 2024) scored USA’s opening goal in a 6-3 win against Germany.  Carter Bear (13th, 2025) is with Canada but is not registered on the roster.

Genborg assisted on Ivar Stenberg’s GWG with 3:57 left in regulation. The game was tied 2-2 when Stenberg scored. Genborg played almost 17 minutes in the game.

Plante played 16:28 for USA and scored the opening goal at 5:34 of the first period. He finished with three shots on goal.  Plante is playing on USA’s second line with Nashville prospects Teddy Stiga and Ryker Lee.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Coach Igor Larionov gave his goalie some bad advice in the KHL.

Detroit captain Dylan Larkin plans to pattern his game after rookie Emmitt Finnie’s game at the Olympics in February.

Coach Todd McLellan is hoping his team comes out of the break with the same zeal they had before Christmas.

When Terry Sawchuk played for the Los Angeles Kings, he hired a company to dump crushed ice on his lawn to give his children a White Christmas in Southern California.

Red Wings Extra

Former Detroit Red Wings goalie James Reimer made 28 saves in helping Canada down the U.S. Select team 3-2 at the Spengler Cup in Davos Switzerland.  Joe Hicketts, another ex-member of the Red Wings organization, is also playing for Canada. Former Red Wings player Marc Bergevin is GM of the team, an ex-Detroit player Stacy Roest is his assistant.  Detroit prospect defenseman Larry Keenan (117th, 2023) of UMass-Amherst is playing for the U.S. squad.  The 6-foot-4 Keenan is establishing a reputation as a highly effective stay-at-home defenseman. He seems to be growing into a role that could earn him a professional contract. He is the grandson of the Larry Keenan that played in the NHL. Filip Zadina is playing for the Davos team.
