Patrick Kane returned to the Red Wings lineup Sunday to contribute to Detroit’s 3-2 overtime win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.  But James van Riemsdyk couldn’t play because he is still nursing an injury after being hit by a shot in the game against the Dallas Stars on Dec. 23.

It doesn’t sound like there is a true timetable for van Riemsdyk. He didn’t play in the loss to the Carolina Hurricanes either.  With nine goals, van Riemsdyk is tied for fourth on the team in scoring. The veteran forward has eight of those goals in the past 14 games. He’s become crucial to the team’s secondary scoring.

“Hopefully we can get him on the ice (Monday) and I can get him skating,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said. “But he needs his legs obviously to do his job. And that shot got him in a bad spot.

Patrick Kane had four shots on goal in his return after missing six games. The line of Alex DeBrincat, Andrew Copp and Kane generated 10 shots.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Bob Duff writes that the Red Wings are a better team than the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Detroit prospect goalie Sebastian Cossa‘s fourth shutout this season helped the Grand Rapids Griffins improve their record to 26-1-0-1 in AHL action.

Could Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson be on the Red Wings’ wish list? Duff has details.

Red Wings Extra

Lucas Raymond has 30 points in 25 games since Nov. 9. With four players over 30 points in Detroit’s first 40 games, the Red Wings have accomplished a feat the team hasn’t done since 2011-12. The four who reached 30 points that quickly were Pavel Datsyuk, Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula and Henrik Zetterberg
