The Daily: Gibson Key to Red Wings’ Ascension; Genborg Wears Gold

John Gibson
John Gibson is 10-2 in his past 12 decisions

Debating the value GM Steve Yzerman’s player acquisitions fills Detroit Hockey Now’s comment section on many days. But anyone watching Detroit’s Monday 5-3 win against the Ottawa Senators would have to agree that he got it right with John Gibson.

As Detroit fans can attest, the Red Wings have many levels of difficulty playing against Ottawa and Brady Tkachuk. That’s why this a major win coming off a poor effort against Pittsburgh

Although coach Todd McLellan’s line changes created the necessary offense, Gibson was the primary reason the Red Wings left Ottawa with a win. He set a tone by giving up zero goals in the first period on 17 shots. His 35 saves in the game included 14 while the Senators were on a power play. The Senators were 1-for-6 with a man advantage and Gibson was their best penalty killer.

Gibson is 10-2 over the past five weeks with .925 save percentage. He’s at .934 for his last three outings. Considering how hard it has been in recent years for the Red Wings to get their save percentage above .900, these are impressive numbers.

He’s the first among a few reasons why the Red Wings are No. 1 in the Eastern Conference this morning. The Red Wings are getting exactly what they hoped to get from Gibson.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

John Leonard is back with the Red Wings. He played 11:03 with one shot in the 5-3 win against the Ottawa Senators.

The return of Michal Postava from injury gives the Red Wings a deeper goalie bullpen.

After calling out his top line, Detroit coach Todd McLellan got better results from Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond against Ottawa. He put them on different lines and they both scored.

Red Wings Extra

The Red Wings have to be thrilled with the role Eddie Genborg (44th, 2025) played in Sweden’s gold medal performance at the World Junior Championships. In addition to his eight points, Genborg contributed a physical presence. He generated three shots on goal and was plus-1 in Sweden’s 3-2 triumph over the Czechia in the gold medal game. This is a prospect who is advanced because of his physical attributes.

Greetings Wingers

Since November Gibson has hit his stride and form but his numbers are not earth shattering: 2025/2026
GAA: 2.94, SV% 0.896. Last five weeks: 0.925.

Respectable, very respectable.

Now I know there are you few that think Talbot is doing just fine and in a bar league you would be right, but if Talbot would have been in net last night we would have lost.

Talbot stats for 2025/2026 are GAA: 2.99 and SV% 0.888. These are not playoffs numbers.

Sebastian Cossa stats, AHL 2025/2026, GAA: 1.67, SV% 0.938.

What are we waiting for? We are already waiting for Kasper to wake up and he is in his sophomore year. Talbot is in his 13th season and that’s not a lucky number. There is no prom looming on Talbots horizon.

Let’s give the kid a shot, he really can’t be any worse than Talbot. We need to make moves now before the Olympics break so we can win as many games as possible or kiss the playoffs goodbye…

Absolutely

Obie

I think it would be in The Wings best interest to see what Cossa can do at the NHL level. If he can do good or hold his own then this could open up a window where Talbot could be traded. There are several teams right now with goalie problems. Might be able to get a good player in return. He is a UFA at season’s end.

Amen Obie,

Take whatever you can get for the guy. Ottawa is undoubtedly looking to fill holes.

If we get draft picks or other options we might be able to parle it into something substantial at the trade deadline.

Let’s get Cossa up here and look him over, right now he’s stopping everything the AHL is throwing at him…

Totally agree, he couldn’t possibly do worse than Talbot. He’s earned the opportunity to get his shot in the NHL. Maybe he could bring Tralmarks and Wallinder with him.

Tom Rady

Sorry dont buy that. Talbot has had some very good games too. They need both of them splitting time or at least sharing the job. Talbot is not going anywhere. Do u watch the games or just look at the stats?

PolarBearBob

Tom,

With all respects, I might ask you the same question. Talbot is a “Sieve”, did you watch the Penguins home game January 1st?

Crosbys second goal had no traffic in front of Talbot he just didn’t have the reaction speed to block the shot. He’s the second oldest goalie in the league behind Jonathon Quick.

The overtime goal Talbot failed to stop was a shot from Kris Letang 15′ away and looking Talbot directly in the face. He’s toast, he’s old and needs to go away.

FYI, statistics are a numerically recorded representation of performance on the ice and Talbots suck…

Talbot have any trade value? Or would it be to release him?
