The Daily: Griffins Lose in Regulation First Time in Seven Weeks; Tkachuk Back?

You can’t win them all, although the Grand Rapids Griffins surely have tried.

The Griffins’ 2-0 loss to the Texas Stars Friday seems shocking because the team had won 29 of their first 32 games this season. The loss was their first regulation-time defeat in seven weeks and only their second regulation loss of the season. It ended their 19-game points streak, although the team still has the best 33-game start in the AHL’s 90-year history.

Michal Postava (stopping 22 of 24 shots) was in goal for the Griffins and suffered his first North American loss. He is 5-1 on the season with a 1.96 GAA.

The Griffins (29-2-1-1) put 29 shots on goal on Texas goalie Remi Poirier.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Coach Todd McLellan’s Detroit squad has an important game against Montreal tonight. The top spot in the Eastern Conference is one the line.

John Leonard goes down to Grand Rapids, and Sheldon Dries is coming up. The Leonard situation involves his waivers situations.

Patrick Kane’s son wants his dad to stay around long enough to score 600 NHL goals.

Red Wings Extra

There’s no lasting impact of the injury Detroit prospect Max Plante (47th, 2024) suffered at the WJC. He had a goal and an assist in Minnesota-Duluth’s 6-3 win against Lindenwood Friday. . . Red Wings Prospects reports that Brent Solomon (109th, 2025) had to leave a game Friday because of a shoulder injury. The severity of the injury wasn’t immediately known. He plays for Sioux Falls in the USHL. . . Detroit defenseman prospect Shai Buium (36th, 2021), on the injury list since training camp, played his first game of the season for the Griffins. He was minus-1 in the 2-0 loss to Texas. . . If you are thinking that Eddie Genborg’s strong play at the World Junior Championships and in the Swedish Hockey League might prompt the Red Wings to think about bringing him to North America for next season, keep in mind that Genborg (44th, 2025 signed a two-year contract with Timra in the SHL.

Florida: The waiving of Noah Gregor might mean Matthew Tkachuk is returning tonight. Another Detroit division rival is getting stronger. Florida Panthers.

New Jersey: James Nichols writes that Sheldon Keefe should not be the fall guy for the mess with the New Jersey Devils.

Philadelphia: Flyers put defenseman Jamie Drysdale on injured reserve. Philadelphia Flyers.

San Jose: Michael Misa is definitely staying for the rest of the season with the San Jose Sharks.

Typical of todays journalists , too lazy to do accurate research and get everything wrong. FACT; the Griffins lost 2 weeks ago on New Years Eve to Milwaukee 3-2 in OT! Get your facts straight!

I’m guessing Allen meant it was their first regulation loss in seven weeks. But it doesn’t seem like any online sites have editors (or cact checkers) onboard any more. It’s a shame because it ruins the credibility of what’s otherwise good reporting.

OlderThanChelios

Hilarious. Make that “fact checkers”. It would be nice if the Edit function worked.

Rink Rat

Hope they’re ready from puck drop. Expect the Habs to come out flying. Please don’t be chasing the game tonight fellas.

Hopefully the Wings will prove that the opening night fiasco was a fluke and not a sign of things to come.

One oddity from the Griffins game is that the Texas Stars scored both of their goals within the final two minutes of the second period. And the second goal, with 25 seconds left in the period, was scored by Cross Hanas, a former 2nd-round pick (#55) of the Wings in 2020.

One bit of encouraging news is that both MBN and Danielson each had three shots on goal (although Nate ended up a -1 on the night). And another strong showing by Postava is great to see.

The attached graphic from TheAHL.com shows both of the Texas goals came from shots right around the goal mouth.

Nice details OTC. I noticed many GR shots on the gamecast were from between the circle and the net, in close. Seemed Poirer had a helluva game is all. Hot goalie did them in.

Yeah, SP, and it wasn’t like a “fluke” thing for him. He’s played well the last two years. So, all things considered, not a terrible loss for the Griffins.
