The Daily: What Andersson Would Cost Red Wings?; Augustine on Richter List

Rasmus Andersson, Calgary Flames

The Detroit Red Wings continue to be linked to a possible trade for Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson, although there has been nothing leaking out of GM Steve Yzerman’s organization.

A deal for Andersson would certainly make some sense because the Red Wings have been looking for a proven top four defenseman since last summer. Andersson plays 24:09 minutes per game for the Calgary Flames as an effective two-way performer.  With the NHL season just past the halfway point, Andersson shows 10 goals and 87 blocked shots. On a team close to the bottom of the standings, his plus-minus is zero.

Keep in mind that Andersson is on an expiring contract, meaning that if the Red Wings cannot re-sign him, then they are acquiring him only for the balance of the season, plus the playoffs. This is a rental situation. Also keep in mind that several teams want Andersson,

Based on our knowledge of how GM Steve Yzerman operates, we would assume that he would not make a deal like this without talking to the player’s agent about whether Andersson would be willing to re-sign in Detroit.

No Detroit offer for Andersson has been confirmed, but we hear the Flames want the equivalent of two first round picks — chiefly a 2026 first round pick and a defenseman who can play now in the NHL or is close to being ready.

Assuming the Red Wings won’t give up Axel Sandin-Pellikka, the logical guess would be that the Flames would be looking at Albert Johansson or Anton Johansson.  Albert Johansson is already playing in the league, and Anton has the added lure of being a physical player.

Perhaps William Wallinder would also be considered, because he probably could play in the NHL now as a third-pairing defenseman.

There is likely to be a conditional pick involved, which would become better if the Red Wings re-sign Andersson.

Red Wings draft pick Trey Augustine (13-5-0, 1.73 GAA, .938 save percentage) is on the Watch List for the Mike Richter Award, which recognizes college hockey’s top goaltender. He was a finalist in 2025. The Red Wings hope/expect to sign him after this season.
