The Detroit Red Wings are playing the San Jose Sharks at home tonight. It needs to be noted that these are not the same Sharks who have missed the playoffs for six years in a row while averaging 58 points per season.

These are the Sharks led by Macklin Celebrini who is one the world’s best young players. These are the Sharks sitting in a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now explained this morning why he believes the Sharks will qualify for the playoffs.

“This isn’t Peter Pan,” Peng wrote. “But in sports, as in life, the power of belief can carry you a long way. There is something special going on in the San Jose Sharks’ locker room.”

The Red Wings certainly understand that thinking because they see that going on with their own team. Coach Todd McLellan has said that the closeness of this Detroit team has played a role in their success this season. The Red Wings are playing for each other.

This is an important game for both the Sharks and Red Wings because their races are tight. The Red Wings are only two points short of being the top Eastern Conference and only five points from being out of a playoff spot. The Sharks have a two-point lead for their wildcard spot in the West.

“(Celebrini is) definitely driving that (Sharks) team, created a lot of confidence,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan. “As he elevates his play, others around him, they elevate their play and now they’re a very tough team to play against.”

The Red Wings returned Sheldon Dries to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Meanwhile, the AHL announced that Grand Rapids Griffins will have three players at the league’s All-Star game. goalie Sebastian Cossa (17-1-2, 1.85 GAA), John Leonard (21 goals) and Dominik Shine (27 points in 26 games) are the choices.  Considering how well the Griffins have performed this season, the AHL could have easily selected three or four others.
