Detroit Red Wings
The Daily: Detroit’s Panarin Odds Slim; JVR Master of PP
Linking the Detroit Red Wings to Artemi Panarin is like finding a connection between children and ice cream. What NHL general manager is not going to be licking his lips over the idea of adding the highly skilled Russian to his roster?
GM Steve Yzerman likely has made a call to Rangers GM Chris Drury, but there are more reasons why other teams will make a deal.
Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman lists Colorado, Washington, Minnesota, and Florida as the teams that could land Panarin. Others see the Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Dallas Stars making a bid. The Red Wings are also mentioned.
But here is the reason why most teams, including the Red Wings, only have a long shot chance: Artemi Panarin has a full no-trade clause and intends to use it. He’s only going to a place that feels right for him. Nobody knows exactly what that will entail. A lengthy contract extension? A true chance of winning the Stanley Cup? Other Russian players?
Some believe the Capitals have a chance because Alex Ovechkin is the team’s captain. Maybe the Wild are in it because he could play on a line, or at least a power play, with Kirill Kaprizov. How about Nikita Kucherov and Panarin in Tampa Bay?
But maybe he wants to go to Colorado because they have the best odds of winning the Stanley Cup. The Panthers would be a lure simply because they are a two-time defending Stanley Cup winner. One of Detroit’s lures would be Patrick Kane. When Kane and the “Bread man” Panarin played together in Chicago, there was magic. But Kane already has a brilliant connection with another ex-Chicago linemate, Alex DeBrincat, in Detroit.
It just doesn’t feel like the Red Wings are at the front of the line on this one. When we get to Vincent Trocheck, another Rangers player to be traded, it could be a different story.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It
Former Detroit goalie Alex Nedeljkovic was involved in the first NHL goalie fight in almost six years.
No other NHL goalie has been more effective than John Gibson has for almost seven weeks.
As it turned out, the Red Wings’ answer for who should play with Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat was already on their roster.
