The Daily: Berggren Is Same Player in St. Louis; Red Wings Pick Hurt

Published

on

Jonatan Berggren, Red Wings, Todd mcLellan,

Jonatan Berggren has primarily been the secondary scorer the St. Louis Blues expected him to be when they claimed him on waivers from the Detroit Red Wings in mid-December.

In 20 games in a Blues jersey, he shows five goals and three assists for eight points. Averaging one goal every four games makes a player a 20-goal scorer in the NHL. Berggren did net 15 goals in his rookie season with Detroit

Recently, Berggren has played on the third line with former Detroit player Pius Suter and Nick Bjugstad. He has two goals and three points in his last three games.  Berggren is on the second power play unit.

Berggren is playing more minutes than he did in Detroit, but he is really the same player he was in Detroit. His scoring is still streaky. He went nine games without a point in one stretch in January.

Glad for Berg. Better player than Raz or Sod. He has 14 pts and Sod and Raz have 17 combined and he has only played 35 games while Sod and Raz have played 89 combined. Another head scratcher.

That may be true, but did the Red Wings need him for what Ras or Soderblom can do? Though of course, they need to do things better.

Redwing bill

Here’s my take on this, I think SY was frustrated with Bergie because he felt he had a higher offensive ceiling and was not living up to it. Basically underachieving and was losing too many Puck battles and had no physicality to his game. Yes I know Ras and Sod play well below their weight class but it was musical chairs with the 4th liners and he was the one left standing. Maybe SY was trying to make a point to the other players. Bottom line – Bergie is doing so so on a crappy team and the Wings are in the hunt for their division lead. JMO

Charlie

I think you nailed everything you said.

MICHAEL C ZACK

CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY WE KEPT SODERBLOM INSTEAD OF BERGGREN? STREAKY OR NOT, THE NUMBERS TELL YOU THE STORY: 3 PTS AND -4. ON TOP OF THAT SODERBLOOM IS WILL NOT USE HIS SIZE ADVANTAGE AND IS AFRAID TO HIT ANYBODY. HES NOT AN NHLer AND NEVER WILL BE. HE’S ANOTHER rED SAVAGE!. I’D RATHER HAVE BERGREEN BACK. MAYBE SY CAN TRADE A 3RD RDer FOR HIM.

ANOTHER GOOD MOVE SY, ANOTHER GOOD MOVE

muttsy19

Pretty simple really, the people who really understand hockey executed the transaction because they know how to run a team. No takers on the trade market for Berggren, waivers he goes.

Charlie

More from you please. These 2 are not bright enough to figure out who is a good hockey player and who isn’t.

Obie

Muttsy if I may. You mention “ the people who really understand hockey” Could you tell me who you are referring to. Is it the general manager that has missed the post season for 6 yrs in a row, signed probably the worst coach he could, has multiple horrible bad signings, traded Hornek for a draft pick and paid to have Walmand taken only to be flipped for a 1’st round pick to say nothing of the many missed trades he floundered on or is it the assistant GM who has missed the post season for 9 straight years and sat at the table when Holland passed up on Hughes and Bouchard to select Zadina. Which of these hockey geniuses would you be referring to.

MICHAEL C ZACK

If your going to continue to speak the truth, we are going to have to ask you to leave the room.

muttsy19

Yes, those are the people that I refer to as “the people that understand hockey.” Regardless of all of the trades and signings that you don’t approve of, it’s easy.

They are paid by professional teams according to what they understand. You can be paid by those same teams according to what you understand, but you don’t get paid by them.

Got anything else that you’d like clarification on?

Obie

Since that is the Braintrust you are referring to then it certainly clarifies your knowledge of hockey

muttsy19

You’re right. I get my knowledge of hockey from playing hockey, season tickets, and from paying money to support the reputable hockey outlets membership fees.

You, on the other hand, act like you get your knowledge of hockey from EASports NHL and are too cheap to support the media outlets you use to regurgitate this idea like you know better than the actual people within the industry.

Have a seat Obie, the adults are talking.

Obie

Playing pond hockey gives you real insight And it only took you 3 days to come up with an answer. I would have thought that even a dumbell like you were sharper than that.

Rink Rat

Draper has been escaping criticism for many years . He was involved in all that nonsense that went on dating is far back as 2011, when he became a scout. Yet he rarely catches any of the heat. Good on you pointing that out. BTW: You forgot to mention the “Holl” signing which was a huge red flag and was a real ‘ WTF? ‘ moment. Then you can look at the other side. To their credit, Gibson has them in position this year. That move is turning out well. As is SY retaining super scout Hakan Andersson in Europe . Hakan has supplied them with several real solid, upcoming players. Mo and Ray already are stars. Ed is on that track as well. So you have to give SY credit as well as criticism.

Obie

As I posted Mike another head scratcher. At the very least keep Berg and put Sod or Raz on waivers instead. Another Walmand fascio in the making.

RWHockey13

Seriously? Comparing Berggren to Walman? What do you do with Berggren when MBN, Genborg, and Bear are ready?

Obie

Yes seriously. I feel Berg is better than Sod or Raz. Why not one of them on waivers instead What are you going to do with Sod or Raz when MBN, Genborg and Bear are ready if ever. Wouldn’t surprise me if St Louis will flip Berg at the TDL for something.

MICHAEL C ZACK

Who says any of them ever play a game in the NHL? Could you add up the NHL games the last 4 # 1 picks. Bear?? Genborg?maybe one day he’ll play in the AHL .

Now really laugh , # of nhl games played by any DRW draft pick since SY hired on, not including #1s.

RWHockey13

Two different players. The best to Berggren, but he was not really needed on the team. Get him back? Why? Soon MBN, Bear, Genborg and more would be replacing him regardless.

BuyMI

Note we are in second place

Old D

Someone mentioned Soderblom, who seems to be following in the “silent footsteps” of Berggren. They’d both be better off in the AHL. Not sure how long they’ll put up with timid play before moving Soderblom somewhere. Just an observation.

Redwing bill

Exactly. I don’t expect him to be with the Wings next year.

Obie

Bill, I certainly hope you are right. These 2 have had their chance. There is no changing them now. They are what they are and will not get any better.

SnnnbythePool

For now, these are guys that are playing on a team in 2nd place. Not exactly losers at this point. Next training camp, we will see what MBN, Tralmarks, Genborg, Bear et al bring to the table. Should be interesting.

Obie – there is a lot to unpack from the poor GM rant but much of it has been addressed in news reports and even in the comments, here. Circumstances are what they are and sometimes not ideal. But yes, if you call around and noone wants to deal for Bergy, then waivers it is. That’s the way things go. Not all deals are steals.

Obie

Sunny I have nothing against waivers for Berg, only that it should have been Sod or Raz first. I believe those two are toast as far as progress, but Berg still has an upside

Redwing bill

With all due respect SBP, I think the criticism for those two is warranted. The Wings 2 physically biggest players very rarely make their physical presence felt or are much of a scoring threat. There’s a reason they are on the 4th line playing limited minutes. I think they’ve both reached their expiration date. I suspect / hope we see several new faces next year. JMO

SnnnbythePool

Obie and RwB – The pop duo known as Sod Ras must know their days are numbered. If it were me, Danny and MBN would be up gaining NHL playing time. Wish Mazur could stay healthy, too. If not sooner, camp looks to be a time for change.

Redwing bill

I’ll second that!!!

Obie
