The Daily: Odds Ugly for Maple Leafs and Panthers; Charlotte Beats Postava

John Tavares-Toronto-Maple-Leafs

Los Angeles residents have a better odds of seeing rain in Southern California on any given day (9.8%) than the Toronto Maple Leafs have to qualify for the NHL playoffs (5.2%) this season.

Playoff odds heading into the Olympic Break also paint a dreary picture for the two-time defending Stanley Cup winning Florida Panthers. They have a 13.2% shot at qualifying for this year’s postseason. That’s just slightly better than the odds (12.5%) of getting three consecutive heads or three consecutive tails while flipping a single coin.

The other interesting note from the Sports Logiq odds is that four Canadian teams (the Jets, Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks) have playoff probability odds of under 5.3%.  You have a better odds of rolling an 11 or 12 throwing two dice (8.33%).

The teams listed on the Playoff Odds charts are the bottom 20 teams. The Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Utah Mammoth, Anaheim Ducks, Tampa Bay Lightning, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes have odds over 80%. The inference here is these  10 would be guilty of a collapse if they miss the playoffs at this point.

These odds suggest that there are probably a minimum of six playoff berths still undecided.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Former Detroit prospect Filip Larsson leaves Penguins organization to sign with Leksands in the Swedish Hockey League.

Artemi Panarin jokes that the reason why he didn’t want to come to Detroit was he hates Patrick Kane. Bob Duff has the story.

Red Wings hope to heal injuries during Olympic break.  They need a strong start coming out of the break.

Red Wings Extra

Goalie Michal Postava’s 33 saves were not enough to prevent the Grand Rapids Griffins from falling 3-0 to the Charlotte Checkers Friday. After uncorking the best start a season in the AHL’s 90-year history, the Griffins have been an ordinary team of late. They are 5-5-1 in their last 11. They are 34-7-2-1.
