Former Red Wings prospect Malte Setkov is a late addition to Denmark's Olympic roster.

Malte Setkov was once a prospect for the Detroit Red Wings.

As of Monday, he’s also an Olympian.

On the eve of the Olympic Games in Cortina, Italy, Setkov has been added to Denmark’s roster.

A position became open when Vegas Golden Knights forward Jonas Røndbjerg suffered an injury in the club’s final pre-Olympic break contest against the Anaheim Ducks.

However, instead of replacing Røndbjerg with another forward, the Danes are opting to shore up their defensive depth by bringing in Setkov.

Drafted by the Red Wings in 2017

Setkov, 27, was the 100th overall selection of the Red Wings in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

“You can tell he moves the puck well,” Detroit assistant GM Shawn Horcoff assessed of Setkov when he was in the Red Wings system, “He’s got some sense, he skates well.”

At 6-foot-8 and 223 pounds, the Danish defender towers over people much like current Red Wings forward Elmer Soderblom.

“I played against Setkov in our league in Sweden,” Soderblom recalled.

Setkov played with Malmö in the SHL, Sweden’s top league. He also played in Sweden with IK Pantern, Kristianstad, and AIK.

The Danish defenseman never signed with the Red Wings, and didn’t play any pro hockey in North America. He currently plays with Rødovre Mighty Bulls in the Danish League. He’s signed with that club through the 2026-27 season. Setkov has accounted for 13 goals and 17 assists in 39 games this season. He won a Danish League title with the Mighty Bulls in 2024-25.

While this will be his first taste of the Olympics, Setkov is a seasoned veteran of the Danish national team. He’s played 89 times for his country at all levels. Setkov played in the 2018 and 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships and in two Deutschland Cups for Denmark.

Setkov has played three games for Denmark this season, collecting one assist.
