Hurricanes Storm Past Red Wings Yet Again

Detroit falls 5-2 in Carolina

Patrick Kane, Red Wings

It was a familiar script and an all-too-familiar outcome for the Detroit Red Wings as they visited Raleigh to face the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night. Detroit lost for the sixth time in a row on the road against the Canes, failing by a 5-2 count.

Falling behind 3-0, the Red Wings lost their sixth successive visit to Carolina. All six setbacks have come in regulation time. In each of those six losses, the Wings have surrendered at least four goals.

The Red Wings also lost 5-2 at Carolina earlier this season on December 27.

Getting the start in goal for Detroit, Cam Talbot made 31 saves. Talbot is winless in his last five appearances. His most recent victory was earned on December 28.

Takeaways

Forward Dominik Shine, recalled from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, went into the lineup in place of Elmer Soderblom . . . Talbot made his first start in the Detroit goal since January 22 . . . Kane’s tally ended a 14-game goalless drought. It was his 501st in the NHL, moving him past Lanny McDonald on the NHL’s all-time goals list.

Key Moment

Goals 47 seconds apart by Simon Edvinsson and Patrick Kane in the final two minutes of the second period pulled the Red Wings to within one goal of the Hurricanes, trailing 3-2. However, any momentum gained from that outburst dissipated when former Detroit defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere scored for Carolina 2:18 into the third period.

Key Stat

The Red Wings have been outscored 26-9 during their six-game losing streak at Carolina.

Up Next For Red Wings

The Wings travel to Nashville to meet the Predators on Monday in their final contest of this three-game road trip. It’s a rare weekday afternoon game, with a 2 p.m. ET start.

What are the next steps? Does Yzerman look at the roster as not being good enough and does little to nothing?

Or does he try to add?

Other teams are winning. Are they a wildcard spot now? I do not know.

Lucky #13,

Look at the Ottawa game, it says everything right there. Our passing was horrible, no forechecking, the only gumption we showed was instigated by the Senators.

The reason we won that game was Gibson! The only reason we won the gold medal was Hellebuyck!

Their play creates confidence in the team and those players feed off of that energy, it’s like a shot of adrenaline.

Cossa may be a complete bust, but what he will bring is what he is bringing now to the Griffs and that is confidence and he will show effort.

I keep saying this, we will go further into the playoffs if we can get a quality goalie partner for Gibson to share the load with. Lucky for us we don’t have to go looking for one, he’s already here.

If we try and ride Gibson like they did in Anaheim he will fail, and if keep putting the “Slug” in the net we lose.

My waking nightmare is Gibson strains a groin muscle and our only option is Cossa and the “Slug” and then we are toast. We fall out of playoff contention and its a decade of no playoffs.

With Cossa and Gibson we have a real chance to bolster our team with confidence that can carry us through our weaknesses of youth and inexperience.

A shinny new quality “nickel plated” defenseman would come in handy but goaltending is the cornerstone.

Cossa failed last year in the AHL playoffs. Thinking they want to see how he handles it this year. It appears quite obviously that the front office is not sold on him yet. On the other hand, you could be right. They’re an injury away from perhaps giving him that test.

Time is right to pull off a Blockbuster Before you start laughing think about it. The Maple leafs are in chaos. Matthews is under brutal attack and he wants out. Toss them a handful of protected firsts and Danielson and another prospect if that’s what it takes. Toronto needs to rebuild, Badly and management is under intense heat there. Just a thought but the time is right, especially on Toronto’s end. The guy would Bloom with the Wings. And the Wings have room for him cap wise . But like you all are thinking SY, probably doesn’t have the balls to pull off such a move. That being said, at the very least snatch Trocheck, a hard-working two-way gritty player. Would solve the second line center spot and is it 200 ft player and is great in the circle… With a very reasonable contract. He’s only got a couple days left to improve this team and give the room a lift …they’re close man. Let’s see what kind of general manager he really is now.

RWHockey13

Oh wow, Auston Matthews wants out of Toronto? It is not so much that I do not think Yzerman wants to do something as much the looming question being, does he believe the team is good enough to do something?

PolarBearBob

Rat,

Now that would surely qualify as a “Blockbuster”! I don’t think the Yazer thinks along the same lines as you and I.

It does make food for pleasant dreams I’ll give you that…

Wingers,

Was there ever a doubt? The ” Slug” in the net = we lose.

Just the very presence of the “Slug” on the ice brings the entire team down.

In the third period Blake and Gostisbehere scored goals with the “Slug” looking them straight in the face, unblocked and they blew the puck right by the clown.

In the first period Hall’s slight of hand with the puck was just to much movement for a burnout like the “Slug” to even begin to follow. That’s why the pathetic walrus was spread eagle face down in the crease at the end of the play.

The Canes saw the “Slug” in the net and knew they had been handed a gift, a golden opportunity to bend us over a trash can and put it in our stern tunes.

Look at the guy’s face after the opposing team scores, he’s got that deer in the headlights look on his face.

Talbot the “Slug” is a joke and it’s a bad joke on the Red Wings. We really had a chance at the end of the 2nd period, if only TM had put Gibson in the game we might have won.

Pitiful, he rides the pine, gets paid, and when he skates onto the ice we lose.

Please, Yazer and TM, get this guy a one way ticket out of town and bring up Cossa before we are out of the running for even a Wild Card spot, PLEASE!!!

Playoff hockey!

After the first period last night, I switched to watching the Griffs (on local TV) and MSU (on the B1G10 Network). There’s good news and bad news for the Wings from those two games.

The good news is that both MBN and Lombardi had two goals in the Griffs’ 6-2 win over Iowa. MBN is playing the kind of “hard nosed” hockey the Wings need in their lineup. And Lombardi is like a waterbug on the ice, using his speed and making moves that leave guys looking for their jock straps. And both have really quick releases.

Good news part 2 is that Cossa looked solid in net. He’s not flailing around like he was for a lot of last year. He’d probably get called up if the Griffins weren’t in such a great position to win the Calder Cup this year. But, if he’s still in the organ-I-zation, he’ll be in Detroit to start the 2026-27 season.

The bad news is “the same old news” as far as I’m concerned. Augustine gave up three goals both Friday and Saturday against Ohio State, and he would have given up a lot more if the Buckeyes would have elevated the puck on him. He tracks the puck really well and he stops everything down low, but he leaves a lot of open net up top. He gets away with it at the college level, but even in the AHL he’ll get lit up if he continues to use the “squatting crab” technique he’s using right now. Personally, I just have very little faith in the guy.

As for the Wings, when you play Carolina, you’d better be prepared to play Rod Brind’Amour-style hockey. And the Wings weren’t even close to that level last night. McLellan constantly talks about “consistency.” The Wings don’t seem to have figured out how to do that yet.

RWHockey13

How sold were you on Cossa when he first started out? No offense, but it seems you are drawing conclusion too early on Augustine. What if he turns out better than Cossa?

OlderThanChelios

Like I said, it’s not Augustine’s talent that bothers me. It’s the type of game he plays. He literally leaves half of the net exposed when he spreads his legs out and “squats” down to cover anything close to the ice. He just won’t get away with that at the pro level where players are adept at elevating the puck.

Maybe he’ll change his style at the next level. If he does, maybe it’ll all work out for him and the Wings. But if he doesn’t (or can’t), then he’s going to get scored on a lot.

Bigstrike

As everybody here knows, without reinforcements, the Red Wings likely miss the playoffs. They looked like a lackluster club team against the Canes. Tough to watch. Talbot was the least of their problems. Edvinsson, Johansson and Sandin-Pellika were downright awful for most of the game as was JVR.
Here’s to hoping help is on the way!
