The Detroit Red Wings are a team in need of more goals. And their prospect forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygard (15th, 2023)) is a player who is scoring them at an impressive rate.

That may seem like a perfect match, but it’s not quite that simple.

Brandsegg-Nygard (15th, 2023), 20, scored two more goals and added an assist Saturday in Grand Rapids Griffins’ 6-2 win against the Iowa Wild. He now has five goals in three games and seven in six games. He is also playing a physical game. But has he improved enough defensively to be an asset in the Red Wings’ stretch drive? As Mickey Redmond often says, defensive mistakes often end up in the back of your net.  Detroit coach Todd McLellan is trying to reduce those mistakes while he trying to increase five-on-five scoring.

Amadeus Lombardi (113th, 2022) is in a similar situation. He scored two more goals for the Griffins. He now has 11 goals and 22 assists for 33 points in 33 games. Much like Brandsegg-Nygard, Lombardi has been tasked to improve his overall game. How close is he to being ready?

Goalie Sebastian Cossa, meanwhile, made 20 saves to improve his record to 24-4-3.  The Red Wings undoubtedly are mulling over whether he might receive a start or two down the stretch. John Gibson cannot play all of the remaining games.

The Griffins again played without John Leonard, Nate Danielson and Ondrej Becher who are all presumed to be injured.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Detroit goalie prospect Trey Augustine (41st, 2023) made 28 saves in regulation and then stopped 11-of-13 shots in the shootout to lift Michigan State to a 4-3 shootout win against Ohio State. . . Carter Bear (15th, 2025) scored another goal Saturday night in a 3-2 win against the Seattle Thunderbirds. The Everett Silvertips winger now has 15 goals in his past 13 games.
