Red Wings Recall Goalie Sebastian Cossa from Grand Rapids
Cam Talbot starting tonight
The Detroit Red Wings called up Sebastian Cossa on Wednesday under emergency conditions because of the injury John Gibson suffered Monday in Nashville.
Based on Cam Talbot being in the starter’s net at the morning skate, he will start when the Red Wings play the Vegas Golden Knights at 7 p.m. tonight at Little Caesars Arena. Cossa will be the backup.
Gibson skated Wednesday. Coach Todd McLellan said he’s feeling better and is listed as day-to-day.
Gibson left Tuesday’s game in Nashville with what coach Todd McLellan called a stinger-like issue in his shoulder. He was relieved by Cam Talbot, who took the team to a 4-2 win against Nashville.
Cossa, 23, is having an exceptional season with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. He boasts a 24-4-3 record with a 1.99 goals-against average and .927 save percentage. The 6-foot-7, 221-pounder owns five shutouts.
As much as the Red Wings would like to see Cossa gain some NHL experience, a Gibson injury falls under the category of very bad news. Gibson has been the team’s most valuable player as the team has put itself in a position to end the franchise’s nine-year playoff drought.
We will know more about Gibson’s situation and Detroit’s goalie plans for tonight after the morning skate. The Red Wings drafted him with the 15th pick in the 2021 NHL draft. He has played one previous NHL game (2024-25) and won it in a relief effort (12 saves).
In related moves, defenseman Erik Gustafsson was assigned to the Griffins. And the Griffins summoned goalie Carter Gylander from the ECHL Toledo Walleye.
I feared this, Gibson goes down because we rode him like a plow mule because our other goalie is useless.
Now we have useless and Cossa a rookie with zero NHL time in net this season as our Red Wings curse of March looms in front of us.
I just don’t get it?
Oh well, strap in and hold onto your butts! Tonight will be telling one way or the other.

If Gibson’s injury is what they’re reporting it is, it has nothing to do with how much he’s played. If it is a “stinger,” he simply got hit in the wrong spot by a shot.
I hope your right OTC, but I don’t trust management when it comes to injury reporting. Simon was also supposed to be gone for a couple of games only. Turned into a longer stint.
Obie,
You read my mind, they aren’t going to put anything with substance out to fans or the competition.
SE was a perfect example of that.
OTC, agreed, it could be unrelated but the more time on ice ups the exposure to injury and it also has a profound affect on recovery due fatigue and levels of exhaustion.

Agree. Also. Just a wild guess. GR might be showing off it’s back up for trade scouts.
Not to worry. Trade deadline coming. Wings could be active. Cossa is a very very experienced goalie for a rookie. Not panic time yet.
