The Daily: Griffins Add Goalie to Deal With Injuries; Kasper Issues

The Grand Rapids Griffins signing of former collegiate goalie Luke Pavicich to a tryout contract probably means that injured goalies Sebastian Cossa and Michal Postava are unavailable for the team’s school-day matinee today (11 a.m.) against the Toronto Marlies.

Coach Dan Watson has said Cossa is day-to-day. However, there has been no official word about Postava who was injured early in Sunday’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Chicago Wolves. The health of the Griffins’ goalies is important to the Red Wings because either Cossa or Postava is the No. 3 goalie if either Cam Talbot or John Gibson is injured.

Pavicich, 23, most recently played for the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings. He owned a 1-1 record with a 2.88 goals-against average and .902 save percentage. Pavicich played his college hockey for UMass (2021-23), UMass-Lowell (2023-24) and Arizona State (2024-25).

The Griffins’ school day game is an annual event. Dan Watson’s group is looking to start a new winning streak after having its season-launching eight-game winning streak halted by Sunday’s loss. Carter Gylander, another Detroit prospect, was in goal for most the shootout loss.

Speaking of streaks, Amadeus Lombardi has registered 10 assists (and no goals) in his first nine games. That ties the franchise record for the most assists in the opening nine games. Kent McDonell also had 10 in 2005-06. John Leonard also has a career-best eight-game points streak that has helped him accumulate nine goals and three assists for 12 points in nine games.

He’s minus-three in that span and has two shots on goal in his past three games. Kasper has had zero shots or one shot in 10 of his 16 games this season.
